Conditional licenses — Maine Permit Test
Conditional licenses on the Maine permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
A license reinstated after an OUI conviction is conditional: you may not drive with any amount of alcohol in your system.
A driver who has already driven drunk once gets no room at all to try it again.
When a person convicted of OUI applies for reinstatement of their license, they are issued a license under the condition that they do not operate a vehicle with any amount of alcohol in their system.
After a first OUI conviction, the reinstated license is conditional for 1 year.
The year of watching is when a driver is most likely to slip back into old habits.
After the first OUI conviction, the reinstated license is conditional for one year.
After a second or later OUI conviction, the reinstated license is conditional for 10 years.
A driver who has done it twice has shown that a short watch is not enough.
After a second or subsequent conviction, it is conditional for ten years.
A conditional licensee caught driving with any amount of alcohol has their license suspended for 1 year, without a preliminary hearing.
One drink is enough to lose the license again, so there is no 'just one' for these drivers.
A conditional licensee will have their driver's license suspended for one year, without preliminary hearing, if operating a motor vehicle with any amount of alcohol.
A conditional licensee who refuses an alcohol test is suspended for 2 years, added to any earlier OUI suspension.
Without a stiff price, a conditional driver could refuse to hide the one drink that would cost them.
A conditional licensee will have their driver's license suspended for a period of two years for any refusal to submit to an alcohol test, a penalty which will be added to any suspension previously handed down for an OUI conviction.
On the test
What is the condition on a license reinstated after an OUI conviction?
No alcohol in your system. A driver who has already driven drunk once gets no room at all to try it again. Maine Driver’s License Manual, p.32: “When a person convicted of OUI applies for reinstatement of their license, they are issued a license under the condition that they do not operate a vehicle with any amount of alcohol in their system.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
