Driving a roundabout — Maine Permit Test
Driving a roundabout on the Maine permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Enter a Maine roundabout by going to the right around the raised center island, counterclockwise.
A car that goes left around the island meets every other car head on.
Enter a roundabout by proceeding to the right around the raised center island (counterclockwise).
The raised pavement on the inside of a roundabout lets trucks get around the small island, while cars stay in the outer travel lane.
A car that drives up on the raised apron takes the room a long truck needs to make the turn.
Raised pavement on the inside of the circle enables trucks to negotiate around the small island, while vehicles stay in the outer travel lane.
Leave a traffic circle or roundabout by making a right turn, and signal your exit.
Drivers waiting to enter cannot tell you are leaving unless your signal shows it.
Exit from the circle or roundabout is then made by making a right turn.
At a large traffic circle, called a rotary, travel to the right around the center island at a slow speed until you near the street you want.
Racing around a rotary leaves no time to find your exit or to see cars coming in.
counterclockwise around the center island at a slow rate of speed until the street desired is approached.
If you will leave a rotary within two exits, you should be in the rightmost lane, unless markings or signs say which lane to use.
A car in the inside lane that cuts out to the exit crosses the path of everyone on its right.
If you are going to be turning from a rotary circle within two exits, it is suggested that you should be in the right most lane (This applies unless otherwise indicated by road markings on pavement or traffic signs specifying the lane to be used.
On the test
Which way do you travel around the center island of a roundabout?
To the right, counterclockwise. A car that goes left around the island meets every other car head on. Maine Driver’s License Manual, p.62: “Enter a roundabout by proceeding to the right around the raised center island (counterclockwise).”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
