License classes — Maine Permit Test

License classes on the Maine permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

Maine has 3 classes of driver's licenses: A, B and C.

Without classes, a driver tested only in a car could take the wheel of a heavy truck.

Maine has 3 classes of driver's licenses.

Maine Driver’s License Manual, p.8

Class C is the standard Maine license issued to most drivers.

A driver who applies for the wrong class may take tests for vehicles they will never drive.

Class C is the standard license classification issued to most motor vehicle operators.

Maine's Class A and Class B licenses are commercial vehicle licenses, set apart by the size and weight of the vehicle.

A big truck needs far more room to stop and turn than a car, so its driver needs a different license.

Class A and B licenses are commercial vehicle licenses and are distinguished by the size and weight of the vehicle to be driven.

Maine Driver’s License Manual, p.8

In Maine a moped may be operated on a driver's license of any class.

A driver who thinks a moped needs a special license may pay for an endorsement they do not need.

Mopeds may be operated on a license of any class.

On the test

How many classes of driver's license does Maine have?

3 classes. Without classes, a driver tested only in a car could take the wheel of a heavy truck. Maine Driver’s License Manual, p.8: “Maine has 3 classes of driver's licenses.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
