Signaling — Maine Permit Test
Signaling on the Maine permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
When you will turn just beyond a side street or intersection, do not turn on your signal until after you have passed it.
Signal too early and a driver waiting at the side street may think you are turning there and pull out.
When making a turn that is beyond a side street, do not put your turn signal on until after passing the side street.
Tap your brake pedal to flash your brake lights when turning off a road that has no separate turn or exit lane, or when parking or turning before an intersection.
The driver behind expects you to keep going and needs an early warning that you will slow.
Signal when reducing speed - Brake lights let others know that you are slowing down. Tap your brake pedal when:
Signal every time you change direction, even when you don't see anyone around, because the car you don't see is the most dangerous.
Skipping the signal when the road looks empty is exactly when a hidden car is hit.
Make it a habit to signal every time you change direction. Signal even when you don't see anyone around. The car you don't see is the most dangerous.
Signal at least 100 feet before any turn or lane change, and as early as you can.
A blinker that starts as you brake gives the car behind almost no warning.
Signal as early as you can-at least 100 feet before any change or turn.
Use hand signals if your turn signals are not working.
Without any signal, the car behind has no idea you are about to turn.
Use hand signals if the turn signals are not working.
After a turn or lane change, make sure your signal cancels.
A blinker left on tells other drivers you will turn when you will not.
After you have made a turn or lane change, make sure the signal cancels.
On the test
You plan to turn just past a side street. When should you signal?
After you pass the side street. Signal too early and a driver waiting at the side street may think you are turning there and pull out. Maine Driver’s License Manual, p.91: “When making a turn that is beyond a side street, do not put your turn signal on until after passing the side street.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
