Bicycle equipment — Missouri Permit Test

Bicycle equipment on the Missouri permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

A bicycle's brakes must be able to stop it within 25 feet when traveling at ten miles per hour.

Twenty-five feet from walking-pace speed is not much to ask. Brakes worse than that will not stop for anything sudden.

Your brakes must be able to stop you within 25 feet when traveling ten mph.

Missouri Driver Guide, p.33

From half an hour after sunset until half an hour before sunrise, a bicycle must show a white light on the front, or one carried by the rider, visible to other drivers from 500 feet.

Five hundred feet is enough distance for a driver to react. A dim light seen at fifty is not.

A White Light on the front of your bicycle or carried by you that other drivers can see from 500 feet.

Missouri Driver Guide, p.33

A bicycle must carry a rear red reflector of at least two square inches, or a rear red light, visible in low beam headlights at 600 feet.

The rear is where a car catches you from. Six hundred feet is the furthest requirement on the bicycle.

a Rear Red Light that drivers can see when reflected by their vehicles’ low beam headlights at 600 feet

Missouri Driver Guide, p.33

A bicycle must carry reflective material or lights on the pedals, crank arms, shoes, or lower legs, visible in low beam headlights at 200 feet.

Moving reflectors read as a person on a bicycle rather than an object at the roadside. That is why they go on the moving parts.

Reflective Material or Lights on the pedals, crank arms, shoes, or lower legs that drivers can see when reflected by their vehicles’ low beam headlights at 200 feet.

Missouri Driver Guide, p.33

A bicycle must carry reflective material or lights on each side, visible in low beam headlights at 300 feet.

A car crossing your path sees you side-on. Nothing on the front or back helps at that angle.

Reflective Material and/or Lights on Each Side of the Bicycle or bicyclist that drivers can see when reflected by their vehicles’ low beam headlights at 300 feet.

Missouri Driver Guide, p.33

You do not have to register or inspect a moped or bicycle, but Missouri law still requires certain equipment on it.

No plates and no inspection sticker does not mean no rules. The lighting and brake requirements still apply.

You do not have to register your moped or bicycle and it does not have to be inspected.

On the test

Within how many feet must a Missouri bicycle's brakes stop it from ten mph?

25 feet. Twenty-five feet from walking-pace speed is not much to ask. Brakes worse than that will not stop for anything sudden. Missouri Driver Guide, p.33: “Your brakes must be able to stop you within 25 feet when traveling ten mph.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
