Electric bicycles — Missouri Permit Test

Electric bicycles on the Missouri permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

An electric bicycle has fully operable pedals, a saddle or seat, and an electric motor of less than 750 watts.

Under 750 watts and still pedalable is what keeps it a bicycle in law rather than a motorcycle.

an electric motor of less than 750 watts that meets the requirements of one of the three classes:

Missouri Driver Guide, p.33

A Class 1 electric bicycle assists only while the rider is pedaling and stops assisting at twenty miles per hour.

Pedal-only assistance keeps it a bicycle you are riding. The cut-off is what keeps the speed in bicycle territory.

Class 1: Bicycle equipped with a motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling and that cease to provide assistance when the bicycle reaches the speed of twenty miles per hour.

Missouri Driver Guide, p.33

A Class 3 electric bicycle assists only while the rider is pedaling and stops assisting at twenty-eight miles per hour.

Class 3 is the fastest of the three, and it still requires you to be pedaling for the motor to help.

ceases to provide assistance when the bicycle reaches the speed of twenty-eight miles per hour

Missouri Driver Guide, p.33

Operating an electric bicycle as defined in Missouri law does not require an operator license or a motorcycle license.

The state treats it as a bicycle. No license, no plate, and the ordinary bicycle rules apply instead.

Operation of an electric bicycle as defined by 301.010 RSMo does not require the rider to hold an operator license or motorcycle license.

On the test

How large may an electric bicycle's motor be under Missouri law?

Less than 750 watts. Under 750 watts and still pedalable is what keeps it a bicycle in law rather than a motorcycle. Missouri Driver Guide, p.33: “an electric motor of less than 750 watts that meets the requirements of one of the three classes:”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
