Lane discipline — Missouri Permit Test
Lane discipline on the Missouri permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
On a highway with two lanes, one in each direction, drive in the right hand lane.
The left of a two-lane road belongs to oncoming traffic. Being in it is only ever temporary.
When driving on a highway with a total of two lanes (one lane in each direction), drive in the right hand lane.
On a highway with four or more lanes, always keep to the right unless you are passing slower traffic, letting a driver enter safely, or getting ready for a legal left turn.
Three reasons to be in the left lane, and each one ends. Staying there after it ends is what blocks the road.
always keep to the right unless you are passing slower traffic, letting another driver have room to enter safely, or getting ready to make a legal left turn
On a road with three or more lanes in the same direction, stay in the right lane except to pass, and use the center lane where a lot of traffic is entering the right lane.
The right lane is the default, but not where cars are joining. Then the middle is the calmer place to be.
If there is a considerable amount of traffic entering the right travel lane, then use the center travel lane.
Never back a vehicle in any travel lane, and if you miss your turn or exit, go on to where you can safely turn around.
Drivers do not expect a vehicle coming toward them backwards, and may not realize it until too late.
In general, never back a vehicle in any travel lane.
Do not stop in travel lanes for any reason, including confusion, a breakdown, or letting out a passenger; keep moving until you can safely pull off the road.
A stopped car in a moving lane is the thing drivers behind you are least prepared for.
Do not stop in travel lanes for any reason (confusion, breakdown, or letting out a passenger).
The best way to control your speed is to know how fast you are going, so check the speedometer often, especially when leaving high speed roads for slower local roads.
After an hour at seventy, forty feels like crawling. The speedometer is the only thing that is not fooled.
This is especially true when you leave high speed roads and begin driving on much slower local roads.
On the test
Which lane do you drive in on a two-lane highway?
The right hand lane. The left of a two-lane road belongs to oncoming traffic. Being in it is only ever temporary. Missouri Driver Guide, p.37: “When driving on a highway with a total of two lanes (one lane in each direction), drive in the right hand lane.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
