Passing on highways — Missouri Permit Test
Passing on highways on the Missouri permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Use the left lane only to pass another vehicle, and never use the shoulder or the unpaved part of the highway to pass.
The shoulder is where broken-down cars and people changing tires are. It is not a lane.
Never use the shoulder or unpaved part of the highway to pass.
You can use the right lane when passing a vehicle that is making a left turn.
A car waiting to turn left has stopped in the lane. Going round it on the right is the only way through.
You can use the right lane when passing a vehicle that is making a left turn.
Before passing on a four-lane highway, check the left lane using your left and inside rearview mirrors and briefly look over your left shoulder.
The mirrors cover most of it and miss the part that matters. The shoulder check is what fills the gap.
check the left lane for traffic by using your left and inside rearview mirrors and briefly looking over your left shoulder
Get through the other driver's blind spot as quickly as you can without exceeding the speed limit, because the longer you stay there the longer you are in danger.
The blind spot is the one place the other driver cannot check. Time spent there is time spent invisible.

Do not turn back into the right lane until you can see the passed vehicle in your rearview mirror.
Seeing the whole car in the mirror means you have cleared it. Judging by feel does not.
Do not turn back into the right lane until you see the passed vehicle in your rearview mirror.
When returning to the right lane after a pass, look over your right shoulder to check your blind spot and be sure to signal.
Coming back is a lane change like any other, and it has its own blind spot on the other side.
Remember to look over your right shoulder to check your blind spot, and be sure to signal.
On the test
Where may you never pass on a Missouri highway?
On the shoulder or the unpaved part of the highway. The shoulder is where broken-down cars and people changing tires are. It is not a lane. Missouri Driver Guide, p.37: “Never use the shoulder or unpaved part of the highway to pass.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
