Night driving — Missouri Permit Test
Night driving on the Missouri permit test — 9 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Turn your headlights on from half an hour after sunset until half an hour before sunrise.
Half an hour either side of the sun is when the light fails but the sky still looks bright enough to a driver.
Turn your headlights on from ½ hour after sunset until ½ hour before sunrise.
Your headlights only let you see about 350 feet ahead, so be sure you are driving slowly enough to stop or turn if needed.
Overdriving your headlights means arriving somewhere before you can see it. The distance is fixed; the speed is not.
Your headlights only let you see about 350 feet ahead.
Use your low beams when you come within 500 feet, about one block, of an oncoming vehicle.
High beams blind the driver coming toward you at exactly the moment you are closest.
Use your low beams when you come within 500 feet (about one block) of an oncoming vehicle.
Use your low beams when following another vehicle within 300 feet.
High beams fill the mirror of the car in front and take away their night vision too.
Also use your low beams when following another vehicle within 300 feet.
Use your high beams when there are no oncoming vehicles.
The extra reach is free when nobody is coming, and it is what finds the deer and the pedestrian.
Use your high beams when there are no oncoming vehicles.
Slow down when nearing a curve at night if you are driving the maximum posted speed limit.
The limit was set for a driver who can see the whole curve. At night you cannot.
Slow down when nearing a curve if you are driving the maximum posted speed limit.
Use the edgeline as a guide at night, or the center line if there is no edgeline.
A line close to your own wheels is easier to hold than the road ahead you cannot see.
Use the edgeline as a guide. If there is no edgeline, use the center line to guide you.
You must use your headlights any time weather conditions require the use of your windshield wipers.
The rule ties one switch to another. If the wipers are on, the lights are on.
You must use your headlights any time weather conditions require the use of your windshield wipers.
Watch carefully at night for highway signs, because they are harder to see, and for people and vehicles stopped at the roadside.
Both are unlit and both matter, and they are easy to pass without ever registering.
Watch carefully for highway signs, as they are harder to see at night.
On the test
When must headlights be on in Missouri?
From half an hour after sunset until half an hour before sunrise. Half an hour either side of the sun is when the light fails but the sky still looks bright enough to a driver. Missouri Driver Guide, p.62: “Turn your headlights on from ½ hour after sunset until ½ hour before sunrise.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
