GDL first year restricted license — Montana Permit Test
GDL first year restricted license on the Montana permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
The restriction code on a Montana first-year restricted license stays on the license for one year.
A teen's highest crash risk is in the first months and first 1,000 miles of driving alone, so the limits last through that stretch.
This restriction will remain on the driver license for one year.
A Montana teen with a restricted license may not drive between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., except in limited cases.
Fatal crashes are more likely at night for every age, and the risk is highest for teens.
Teenage drivers with a restricted driver license may not drive between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.
The exceptions to the late-night limit include emergencies, farm-related activities, travel to and from school, church or work, and purposes a parent or guardian authorizes.
A teen with a night shift or chores on the farm would otherwise have no legal way to get there.
There are limited exceptions to this rule, including:
For the first six months of a restricted license, unless a licensed adult is supervising, a teen may carry only one unrelated passenger under 18.
Each extra teen in the car adds noise and distraction, and crash risk climbs with every one.
One passenger: For the first six months, unless supervised by a licensed adult driver, a teenage driver may have only one unrelated passenger under the age of 18 in the vehicle.
For the second six months of a restricted license, unless a licensed adult is supervising, a teen may carry three unrelated passengers under 18.
A car full of friends on a teen's first nights alone is a big distraction, so the limit loosens only after six months of practice.
More passengers: For the second six months, unless supervised by a licensed adult driver, a teenage driver may have three unrelated passengers under the age of 18 in the vehicle.
On the test
How long does the restriction stay on a first-year restricted license?
1 year. A teen's highest crash risk is in the first months and first 1,000 miles of driving alone, so the limits last through that stretch. Montana Driver Manual, p.8: “This restriction will remain on the driver license for one year.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
