Point values — North Carolina Permit Test

Point values on the North Carolina permit test — 7 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

Passing a stopped school bus and aggressive driving each carry five driver license points, the highest value on the schedule.

These two put other people in the most danger, so they cost the most. Five points is almost half way to a suspension.

Reckless driving, hit and run with property damage only, following too closely, driving on the wrong side of the road, and illegal passing each carry four points.

These are the offenses that cause crashes rather than merely break a rule. Four points each puts them a step below the school bus.

Running through a stop sign or a red light, speeding in excess of 55 mph, and failure to yield right of way each carry three points.

A red light run is three points, and four of them in three years is a suspension. The schedule adds up faster than drivers expect.

Failure to yield right of way to a pedestrian, or to a bicycle, motor scooter or motorcycle, carries four points.

The person on foot or on two wheels has nothing around them. Failing to yield to them costs more than failing to yield to a car.

Failure to yield right of way to bicycle, motor scooter or motorcycle 4

North Carolina Driver Handbook, p.34

No points are assessed for offenses such as overload, illegal parking, carrying a concealed weapon, improper plates or registration, an improper muffler, or failure to display a current inspection certificate.

Points are for how you drive. A parking ticket or a loud muffler is a violation, but not a driving one.

No points shall be assessed for convictions of the following offenses: • Overload; • Overlength; • Overwidth; • Overheight; • Illegal parking;

North Carolina Driver Handbook, p.36

Convictions while operating a commercial motor vehicle carry higher point values, and the fine or penalty may be doubled.

A professional driver is held to a higher standard, and a bigger vehicle does more harm. The law prices both in.

Any person who commits an offense for which points may be assessed for violations while operating a commercial motor vehicle may be assessed double the amount of any fine or penalty authorized by statute.

North Carolina Driver Handbook, p.36

Passing a stopped school bus while operating a commercial motor vehicle carries eight points.

A truck passing a school bus is the worst case of the worst offense. The commercial schedule prices it at eight.

On the test

How many driver license points does passing a stopped school bus carry?

5 points. These two put other people in the most danger, so they cost the most. Five points is almost half way to a suspension. North Carolina Driver Handbook, p.34: “Passing a stopped school bus 5 Aggressive driving 5”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
