New residents — New Hampshire Permit Test
New residents on the New Hampshire permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
A new resident has up to 60 days after moving into New Hampshire to obtain a New Hampshire driver’s license.
The window is there so somebody who has just moved can unpack first, but it closes, and driving after it is driving unlicensed.
New residents to New Hampshire have up to 60 days to obtain a driver’s license after moving into the State.
Under the One License Concept in RSA 263:4, a new resident must surrender all valid driver licenses issued by any other jurisdiction when applying for a New Hampshire license.
Two licenses means two records, and a suspension on one of them would not follow a driver to the other.
RSA 263:4 requires that new residents to NH surrender all valid driver licenses issued by any other jurisdiction when applying for a New Hampshire driver’s license.
An application for a driver’s license will not be accepted while the applicant’s driving privileges are under suspension or revocation in another state.
Crossing a state line does not clear a suspension. The other state has to lift it first, or a driver could simply move to get around it.
An application for driver’s license will not be accepted if the driver’s privileges are under suspension or revocation in any other state until the driver’s privileges are reinstated.
A foreign citizen visiting the United States as a tourist who holds a valid license from their home country is exempt from obtaining a New Hampshire license.
A visitor is not moving here, so the rule that gives a new resident 60 days does not apply to them at all.

A member of the US military stationed in New Hampshire who holds a valid license from their home state is exempt from obtaining a New Hampshire license.
Service members are posted where they are told to go, so being stationed here is not the same as choosing to move here.

On the test
How long does a new resident have to obtain a New Hampshire driver’s license?
60 days after moving in. The window is there so somebody who has just moved can unpack first, but it closes, and driving after it is driving unlicensed. New Hampshire Driver's Manual, p.1: “New residents to New Hampshire have up to 60 days to obtain a driver’s license after moving into the State.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
