Sign colors — New Hampshire Permit Test

Sign colors on the New Hampshire permit test — 9 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

On a traffic sign the color red means prohibition, either stop or do not do something.

One color carries the whole idea of a thing you may not do, which is why it is used so sparingly.

Red Prohibition (stop or do not do something)

New Hampshire Driver's Manual, p.21

On a traffic sign the color green means direction or guidance.

Green signs are the ones a driver reads to find out where they are going rather than what they must do.

Green Direction or guidance

New Hampshire Driver's Manual, p.21

On a traffic sign the color blue means driver services.

Fuel, food and a hospital are not rules, so they get a color that does not compete with the ones that are.

Blue Driver services

New Hampshire Driver's Manual, p.21

On a traffic sign the color yellow means a general warning.

Yellow tells a driver to expect something without saying it is forbidden, which is a different message from red.

Yellow General warning

New Hampshire Driver's Manual, p.21

On a traffic sign the color white means a law or rule of the road.

White signs carry the rules a driver can be ticketed for, which is why there are so many of them.

White Law or rule of the road

New Hampshire Driver's Manual, p.21

On a traffic sign the color orange means a road repair work warning.

Orange is reserved for work zones so a driver knows at a glance that the road ahead is not as it usually is.

Orange Road repair work warning

New Hampshire Driver's Manual, p.21

On a traffic sign the color brown means tourist and recreation guidance.

Brown separates the park from the highway exit, so a driver looking for one is not distracted by the other.

Brown Tourist and recreation guidance

New Hampshire Driver's Manual, p.21

On a traffic sign the color pink means incident management.

Pink is rare enough that a driver who sees it knows something unusual has happened on the road ahead.

Pink Incident management

New Hampshire Driver's Manual, p.21

On a traffic sign the color purple means E-ZPass.

The color marks the lanes a driver may only use with a transponder, which is a decision made at speed.

Purple EZPass

New Hampshire Driver's Manual, p.21

On the test

What does the color red mean on a traffic sign?

Prohibition. One color carries the whole idea of a thing you may not do, which is why it is used so sparingly. New Hampshire Driver's Manual, p.21: “Red Prohibition (stop or do not do something)”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
