Traffic signals — New Hampshire Permit Test
Traffic signals on the New Hampshire permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
At a solid green traffic light a driver may go through the intersection if it is clear, and must yield to pedestrians and vehicles already in it.
A green light gives permission to enter, not a guarantee the intersection is empty.
Drivers must yield to pedestrians and vehicles in an intersection.
A solid yellow traffic light is a warning that the traffic light is about to change to red.
Yellow is information, not an instruction to hurry. It tells a driver how much of the green is left.
This is a warning light to let a driver know the traffic light is about to change to red.
At a solid red traffic light a driver must stop before entering the intersection and wait behind the stop line, crosswalk or intersection until the light turns green.
Where you stop matters as much as that you stop, because the space you leave is where pedestrians cross.
behind the stop line, crosswalk, or intersection until the traffic light turns green.
A driver may make a right turn on a red signal only if there is no sign prohibiting a right turn on red.
The turn is allowed by default here, so the thing to look for is the sign that takes it away.
Drivers may make a right turn on a red signal ONLY IF there is no sign prohibiting a right turn on red.
At a flashing yellow traffic light a driver should slow down, proceed with caution, and be prepared to stop for any traffic entering the intersection.
A flashing yellow means the intersection is not being managed at all, so the judgment is entirely the driver’s.
Slow down and proceed with caution. Drivers should be prepared to stop for any traffic flow entering the intersection.
At a flashing red traffic light a driver must come to a complete stop behind a stop line, crosswalk or intersection before proceeding, yielding any right-of-way.
A flashing red is a stop sign made of light, and drivers who treat it as a caution arrive in the intersection together.
Drivers must come to a complete stop behind a stop line, crosswalk, or intersection before proceeding though the intersection, yielding any right-of-way.
On the test
What must a driver do at a solid green light?
Yield to pedestrians and vehicles already in the intersection. A green light gives permission to enter, not a guarantee the intersection is empty. New Hampshire Driver's Manual, p.20: “Drivers must yield to pedestrians and vehicles in an intersection.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
