Turning — New Hampshire Permit Test
Turning on the New Hampshire permit test — 7 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Before turning a driver should search all corners for traffic controls, pedestrians and other vehicles, and signal their intentions.
A turn takes you across a piece of road you have not been looking at, and the corners are where the surprises are.
Search all corners for traffic controls, pedestrians, other vehicles, etc. and signal intentions.
A driver should enter and maintain proper position in the lane that is closest to the direction they want to go.
Being in the right lane early means the turn is a small movement rather than a scramble across traffic.
Enter and maintain proper position in the lane that is closest to the direction they want to go.
A driver should look through the turn to the farthest point possible along the intended path.
A car goes where the driver is looking, so looking through the turn is most of how it is steered.
Look through the turn to the farthest point possible along the intended path.
A driver should always turn right from the right-most portion of the lane, and avoid swinging wide to the left before making the turn.
Swinging wide invites the driver behind to squeeze past on the inside, which is exactly where you are about to go.
Always turn right from the right-most portion of the lane.
A driver should always turn left from the left-most portion of the lane, and must yield to oncoming traffic when making a left turn.
Starting from the left keeps the turn tight and keeps the car out of the path of anybody going straight.
Always turn left from the left-most portion of the lane.
Where multiple lanes are turning, a driver should identify which lane to use, enter it, and stay in that lane until the turn is completed.
Two cars turning side by side have no room to drift, so the lane you start in is the lane you must finish in.
Stay in that lane until the turn is completed.
After a turn a driver should accelerate smoothly to an appropriate speed, make sure the turn signal is canceled, and check traffic to the rear.
A signal left on after a turn tells everybody behind you that another turn is coming, and they act on it.
Accelerate smoothly to appropriate speed, make sure turn signal is cancelled and check traffic to the rear.
On the test
What should a driver do before turning?
Search all corners and signal their intentions. A turn takes you across a piece of road you have not been looking at, and the corners are where the surprises are. New Hampshire Driver's Manual, p.25: “Search all corners for traffic controls, pedestrians, other vehicles, etc. and signal intentions.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
