Large vehicles — New Jersey Permit Test

Large vehicles on the New Jersey permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

In bad weather a truck, tractor-trailer or bus can take as much as 25 percent longer to stop.

There is far more weight behind the same set of brakes, and rain takes the rest of the grip.

during bad weather, a truck, or tractor-trailer, or bus can take as much as 25 percent longer to stop

New Jersey Driver Manual, p.147

If a driver cannot see the large vehicle's mirrors, that vehicle's driver cannot see them either.

Mirrors work both ways. It is the simplest test there is for a blind spot.

If the driver of a large truck, or tractor-trailer, or bus cannot see another motorist’s vehicle in the rearview or side-view mirrors, the vehicle is in a no-zone, or blind spot.

New Jersey Driver Manual, p.147

A driver does not pull back in front of a truck until the whole front of it shows in the rearview mirror.

The truck needs far more room to stop than a car, and cutting in takes that room away.

Do not pull in front of a truck when passing until the whole front of the truck can be seen in the rearview mirror.

New Jersey Driver Manual, p.149

A truck may swing wide to the left before making a right turn, so a driver gives it room.

The trailer cuts the corner the cab went around, and the gap on the right is where it will land.

a truck may have to swing wide to the left to make a right turn

New Jersey Driver Manual, p.149

A driver leaves space when stopping behind a truck or bus at a light or a sign, especially facing uphill.

A large vehicle rolls back a little when it pulls away, and it does not know you are there.

Leave space when stopping at a light or sign behind a truck, tractor-trailer, or bus, especially when facing uphill.

On the test

How much longer can a large vehicle take to stop in bad weather?

As much as 25 percent longer. There is far more weight behind the same set of brakes, and rain takes the rest of the grip. New Jersey Driver Manual, p.147: “during bad weather, a truck, or tractor-trailer, or bus can take as much as 25 percent longer to stop”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
