Road test — New Jersey Permit Test

Road test on the New Jersey permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

A GDL permit holder under 21 must have at least six months of supervised practice before a road test appointment.

Six months puts a learner through rain, dark and traffic before anybody grades them.

GDL permit holders under 21 years of age must have a minimum of six months supervised practice driving which must include a minimum of 50 practice driving hours, including 10 during darkness prior to a road test appointment.

New Jersey Driver Manual, p.34

A GDL permit holder aged 21 or over must have at least three months of supervised practice before a road test appointment.

An older learner practices for less time, but the state still wants months of it rather than a weekend.

GDL permit holders, 21 years old and over, must have a minimum of three months supervised practice driving prior to a road test appointment.

New Jersey Driver Manual, p.34

A licensed driver must stay in the vehicle with a road test applicant, and the vehicle may not be moved without one.

The applicant is still a permit holder while they wait. Nothing about the test line changes that.

However, a licensed driver must always remain in the vehicle with the applicant.

New Jersey Driver Manual, p.35

A vehicle may be rejected for a New Jersey road test for worn tires, bad brakes, cracked glass or a missing mirror.

The examiner has to ride in the car. A vehicle that cannot be stopped safely is not a test, it is a risk.

Any defect or condition that affects the safe operation of the test vehicle

On the test

How long must a New Jersey GDL permit holder under 21 practice before a road test?

At least 6 months of supervised practice. Six months puts a learner through rain, dark and traffic before anybody grades them. New Jersey Driver Manual, p.34: “GDL permit holders under 21 years of age must have a minimum of six months supervised practice driving which must include a minimum of 50 practice driving hours, including 10 during darkness prior to a road test appointment.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
