Snow and ice removal — New Jersey Permit Test
Snow and ice removal on the New Jersey permit test — 3 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
New Jersey law requires a driver to remove snow and ice from the vehicle before driving it.
A sheet of ice off a roof at highway speed goes through the windshield of the car behind.
State law (N.J.S.A. 39:4-77.1) requires a motorist to remove snow or ice from a vehicle before driving it.
A driver who fails to clear snow or ice faces a fine of $25 to $75 whether or not anything flies off.
The fine lands for the risk, not the result. Waiting for the ice to hit somebody is too late.
Any person who violates this law is subject to fines of $25 to $75, regardless of whether any snow or ice is dislodged from the vehicle.
Dislodged snow or ice that causes injury or property damage may bring fines of up to $1,500.
A slab of ice does the damage of a thrown rock. The bigger fine matches what it can do.
If dislodged snow or ice causes injury or property damage, fines up to $1,500 may be assessed.
On the test
What must a New Jersey driver do about snow on the car before driving?
Remove it from the vehicle first. A sheet of ice off a roof at highway speed goes through the windshield of the car behind. New Jersey Driver Manual, p.47: “State law (N.J.S.A. 39:4-77.1) requires a motorist to remove snow or ice from a vehicle before driving it.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
