Basic speed rule — Oklahoma Permit Test
Basic speed rule on the Oklahoma permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Oklahoma's Basic Speed Rule says to consider all the conditions that affect your driving, drive at a speed that is safe for those conditions, and be able to stop without hitting anyone.
A speed limit is set for a dry, clear day; the road you are on right now may be wet, dark or crowded.
Consider all the conditions that affect your driving, drive at a speed that is safe for those conditions and be able to stop without hitting anyone.
Under the Basic Speed Rule your speed must be careful and prudent, which means using skill and good judgment.
Judgment is what tells you to slow down before a hazard that no sign warns you about.
Your speed must be careful and prudent (using skill and good judgment).
The Basic Speed Rule lists the conditions your speed must suit, among them whether pedestrians are present, especially children in school zones.
People on foot can step out with no warning, and children most of all, so you need time to stop.
Your speed must be reasonable and proper, not too fast and not too slow, for the conditions:
Your speed must be adjusted to conditions so you can stop within a clear distance ahead.
If something appears in the road, the only space you can use to stop is the space you can see is empty.
Your speed must be adjusted to conditions so you can stop within a clear distance ahead.
If the car ahead stops suddenly and you cannot stop in time, you are breaking the Basic Speed Rule or following too closely, even if you were within the posted limit.
Hitting a car from behind proves you were too fast or too close for that moment, whatever the sign said.
If you can’t stop in time to avoid hitting that car from behind, you are either breaking the “Basic Speed Rule”—even if you were driving within the posted speed limit—or following too closely.
On the test
What does Oklahoma's Basic Speed Rule require of your speed?
A speed safe for the current conditions. A speed limit is set for a dry, clear day; the road you are on right now may be wet, dark or crowded. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.40: “Consider all the conditions that affect your driving, drive at a speed that is safe for those conditions and be able to stop without hitting anyone.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
