Oklahoma Permit Practice Test — Written Test, 20 Questions

Free 10-question Oklahoma permit practice test, then full 20-question tests like the real exam (15 to pass), each question cited to the Oklahoma Driver Manual.

The exam

The Oklahoma Office of Management and Enterprise Services knowledge test is 20 questions, and 15 correct is a pass. Everything on it comes out of Oklahoma Driver Manual. Officially it is the knowledge test; most people call it the written test, or the permit test.

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

Ask a question about Oklahoma road law

Easier than searching the manual: ask in your own words — how far from a fire hydrant you may park, when you must stop for a school bus — and the answer comes from Oklahoma Driver Manual, with the page it is on. When the manual does not say, the answer says so rather than guess. Or tick Nationwide and compare every state on one question.

What Oklahoma tests

195 concepts, 635 separate rules. Each one is a page of its own.

Questions from the Oklahoma test

Who must have an Oklahoma driver license?

All residents who drive on any Oklahoma street or highway. The state can only check that a driver knows its road rules if every resident driving its roads holds its license. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.4: “All residents who operate a motor vehicle on any Oklahoma street or highway.”

How old must a nonresident with a valid home-state license be to drive in Oklahoma without an Oklahoma license?

At least 16 years old. A visitor who already passed a licensing test at home does not need a second license just to drive through. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.4: “Nonresidents at least 16 years old who are properly licensed to drive in their home state or country.”

What must you bring if you are taking the Oklahoma driving test?

Valid proof of auto liability insurance. The examiner rides in your car, so the car must be insured in case something goes wrong during the test. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.5: “Bring valid proof of auto liability insurance if you’re taking the driving test.”

Must an applicant 18 or older complete driver education to get an Oklahoma Class D license?

No, driver education is not required. Adults are expected to learn the rules by study and practice, so the state does not make a course a condition for them. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.6: “Class D 18+ Cars, vans, trucks under 26,001 lbs. (GVWR), recreational vehicles, fire trucks. Driver education not required.”

What is the youngest age at which you can get a Class D learner permit in Oklahoma?

Age 15. Starting young, with an adult beside you, gives you more supervised practice before you ever drive alone. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.10: “Learning Permit, age 15 and up”

What does a 16-year-old need for an Oklahoma intermediate license that a 16 1/2-year-old does not?

A driver education completion certificate. Teens who finish a course get trained sooner, so the state lets them move up six months earlier than teens who did not. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.6: “16 – Cars, vans, trucks under 26,001 lbs. (GVWR), recreational vehicles, fire trucks. Must show completion certificate from an approved driver education course.”

In Oklahoma, who is required to wear a helmet on a motorcycle?

Anyone under 18. Young riders crash more often, and a helmet is what keeps a fall from becoming a head injury. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.7: “A helmet is required for anyone under 18 years of age.”

Between which hours may a teen with an Oklahoma restricted GDL license drive on their own?

5 a.m. to 10 p.m.. Late-night driving is the most dangerous for new drivers, with darkness, tired drivers and more impaired drivers on the road. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.8: “House Bill 1599 requires teens to apply for the license which restricts their driving time to the hours of 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. with the exceptions for driving to work, school, church or related activities or if a licensed driver over 21 years of age is seated next to the teenager.”

How many passengers may a teen with a restricted GDL license carry, when the passengers are from different households and no adult is along?

1 passenger. Every extra friend in the car adds noise and distraction, and a teen's crash risk climbs with each one. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.8: “The bill also prevents teenage drivers from chauffeuring their friends around town, limiting teens with a restricted license to one passenger unless all passengers live in the same household, unless a licensed driver over 21 years of age is seated next to the teenager.”

A teen at the learner or intermediate GDL level is convicted of a moving violation. How long do they stay at that level?

Until 6 months from the conviction. A ticket shows the teen is not ready for more freedom yet, so they keep the extra limits a while longer. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.8: “You will remain at your current GDL level (learner or intermediate) until 6 months from the date of conviction has elapsed.”

How does Oklahoma's Graduated Driver License program work?

It phases in privileges as teens gain experience. Teen drivers crash more than any other age group, so freedom is added in steps as their skill grows. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.8: “The GDL program gradually phases in driving privileges for new teen drivers as they gain experience behind the wheel.”

How many hours of classroom training does Oklahoma's Parent-Taught Driver Education require?

30 hours. Classroom hours cover the rules and dangers you need to know before practice on the road makes sense. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.8: “Students are required to complete 30 hours of classroom training and 55 hours of actual behind-the-wheel training, which is all programmed into the curriculum of approved providers.”

Which three tests are given for an Oklahoma Class D license?

Vision, written and driving. Each test checks a different thing you need: that you can see, that you know the rules and that you can handle the car. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.9: “For the Class D license, there are three tests: the vision screening, the written test and the driving test for cars and motorcycles.”

What must you pass before you can take the Oklahoma driving test?

The vision screening and the written test. There is no point testing your driving until you have shown you can see the road and know its rules. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.9: “You must pass the vision screening and the written test.”

After you pass all the requirements, how do you get your plastic Oklahoma license card?

It arrives in the mail at your address. Your address must be right, because the real card is mailed there and nowhere else. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.9: “The plastic card will arrive in the mail at the address you provided.”

Which of these can cause you to fail the Oklahoma driving test?

Refusing to perform a maneuver. Each of these shows the examiner you are not yet safe to drive alone, even if most of the test went well. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.10: “You can fail the driving test for too many errors, dangerous driving, law violations, traffic collisions or refusing to perform a maneuver.”

You move to Oklahoma with a valid Class D license from another state. Which test is required?

The vision test. Every driver's eyes are checked again, but a driver already licensed elsewhere may not need to prove the rest twice. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.10: “Out-of-State Transfer of a valid Class D license R D D”

When should you carry your Oklahoma driver license?

Always, whenever you drive. If you are stopped or in a crash, your license is the quick proof that you are allowed to drive. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.11: “Always carry your license with you when you drive.”

If your vehicle is required by federal law to have a third brake light, when must it be working?

At the time of testing. The high center brake light warns drivers several cars back that you are stopping, which helps prevent rear-end crashes. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.12: “If your vehicle is required by federal law to have the third brake light, it must be in working order at the time of testing.”

Who may inspect your vehicle and its equipment in Oklahoma?

Officers. Worn brakes or broken lights put everyone on the road at risk, so officers can check a car's equipment. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.12: “Officers may inspect a vehicle and its equipment according to 47 O.S. §13-102.”

According to the Oklahoma manual, what does a rectangular sign tell you about?

Laws, regulations or instructions. Knowing the shape lets you tell from far away that a sign is a rule you must obey, before you can read it. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.19: “For example, a rectangle is always a regulatory sign, telling you about laws and regulations or giving you instructions.”

What is it in Oklahoma to deface, damage or remove a road sign?

A misdemeanor crime. A missing stop sign can cause a crash at the next intersection, so the law treats tampering with signs as a crime. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.19: “In accordance with 47 O.S. §11-207, obstructing or damaging roads, defacing, damaging, destroying or removing any traffic control device, road sign board, guide sign or signpost is a misdemeanor.”

At this sign, where must you stop if the crosswalk has no painted lines?

Before the crosswalk, marked or not. People on foot cross at corners whether or not lines are painted, and stopping short keeps your car out of their path. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.19: “You must stop before the pedestrian crosswalk, even if it isn’t marked.”

What does a 4-WAY or ALL WAY plate below a stop sign mean?

All traffic coming to it must stop. Knowing that every driver must stop tells you to take turns rather than expect cross traffic to keep going. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.19: “Added below a stop sign, means all traffic approaching this intersection must stop.”

What does this sign warn you of?

A traffic signal ahead. A signal around a bend or over a hill can turn red before you can see it. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.21: “Traffic control signal ahead. Be prepared to stop.”

A warning sign shows two roadways coming together with a new lane added. Must you merge?

No, but watch for traffic in the new lane. The road joining you keeps its own lane, but cars in it may still move over beside you. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.21: “You do not have to merge (form one line), but watch for traffic in the new lane.”

What does this sign mark?

A school zone. Children near a school may run into the road without looking, so drivers need to know when they are close. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.21: “SCHOOL SIGNS School Zone”

What does this sign tell you?

Railroad tracks are ahead. Trains cannot stop or swerve for you, so you need warning well before you reach the tracks. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.22: “This advance warning sign lets you know you are approaching railroad tracks.”

What does a plate with a number under a railroad crossing sign show?

How many tracks cross there. After one train passes, a second can be coming on another track, hidden behind the first. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.22: “If there is more than one track, a sign will show the number of tracks at that crossing.”

At the work zone this sign warns of, what speed must you slow to?

The posted speed. Workers stand a few steps from moving traffic, and the posted speed is set so a driver can stop or steer around them. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.23: “CONSTRUCTION SITES can be hazardous. You must slow down to the posted speed.”

When are speeding fines doubled in an Oklahoma construction or maintenance zone?

When workers or equipment are present. A worker hit at speed has no car around them, so the law raises the cost of speeding where they stand. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.23: “Speeding fines are doubled in a construction or maintenance zone when workers or equipment are present.”

What kind of information do signs like this give you?

Routes, distances and exits. Reading guide signs early lets you choose your lane and exit calmly instead of braking at the last second. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.25: “GUIDE SIGNS give you travel information.”

What does a BUSINESS route guide sign mark?

A route through the business district. Knowing it leaves the main route keeps you from following it into city traffic when you meant to stay on the highway. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.25: “BUSINESS ROUTE GUIDES SIGNS indicates an officially designated highway that branches off the regularly numbered highway and goes through the business portion of the city.”

A police officer is directing traffic at an intersection where the signal shows red. What should you do?

Follow the officer's directions. An officer can see a jam or a crash the signal knows nothing about, so the officer's word has to win. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.26: “You must obey traffic signals, except when an officer is directing traffic.”

On a standard vertical traffic signal, which light is on the bottom?

Green. Knowing the order lets a color-blind driver, or anyone squinting into the sun, read the signal by position. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.26: “Color-blind people know the color by the position of the lights: Red on top—Yellow in the middle—Green on the bottom.”

Your light has just turned green. Who must you still yield to?

Pedestrians in the crosswalk and vehicles legally in the intersection. A green light tells you it is your turn to start, not that the people still crossing have vanished. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.26: “You must yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk and to other vehicles legally in the intersection.”

A flashing yellow left-turn arrow is lit. What may you do?

Turn left after yielding to oncoming traffic and pedestrians. Oncoming cars have a green light at the same time, so turning in front of them without waiting causes a broadside crash. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.26: “Oncoming traffic has the right-of-way.”

The light ahead turns steady yellow and you can stop safely before the crosswalk. What must you do?

Stop before the crosswalk. The light is about to turn red, and drivers who push through a yellow are the ones caught in the middle when cross traffic starts. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.26: “You must stop if you can stop safely before entering the crosswalk at the intersection.”

Where must you stop for a steady red light?

Before the crosswalk or intersection. Cross traffic and pedestrians are moving on their green, so creeping into the crosswalk puts you in their path. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.26: “Come to a complete stop before entering the crosswalk or intersection.”

What does a flashing red traffic light mean?

The same as a stop sign. Flashing red is used at dangerous intersections where cross traffic may not stop, so every driver must stop and look. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.26: “A flashing red light means the same as a stop sign: You may go when it’s safe to cross the intersection.”

A red arrow is lit for your turn lane. What must you do before turning?

Wait for a green signal. The arrow is red because traffic or people are crossing the path that turn would take. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.26: “In general, the red arrow means that all turns in the direction of the arrow are prohibited.”

When may you turn right on a red light in Oklahoma?

After a complete stop, unless a sign forbids it. Stopping first gives you time to see the pedestrians and cars that have the green. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.26: “After coming to a complete stop, you may turn right on red and you may turn left from a one-way street into a one-way street unless there are signs forbidding the turn.”

What should you do at a flashing yellow traffic light?

Slow down and look both ways. A flashing yellow warns of a risky crossing where other traffic may not be stopping for you. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.26: “Slow down, look in both directions and drive slowly and carefully through the intersection.”

A green arrow and a red light are lit at the same time. What may you do?

Turn only in the arrow's direction. The arrow means the conflicting traffic is being held, so the turn is protected even though the main light is red. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.26: “When the green arrow is lit, you may turn in the direction of the arrow, even when the red light is still on.”

A pedestrian sees a Walk sign and a traffic light at the same corner. Which should the pedestrian obey?

The Walk sign. The pedestrian signal is timed for walking speed, so a walker following the car light can be caught mid-street. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.27: “Pedestrians should obey these signs, if present, instead of the traffic signal.”

What does a red X lane control signal over a lane mean?

Don’t use the lane. Lanes over bridges and in tunnels switch direction, and a red X marks a lane that may be carrying traffic toward you. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.27: “Red Don’t use lane.”

On a two-lane, two-way road, what does a broken yellow center line mean?

Passing is permitted. Broken lines mark stretches where you can see far enough ahead to pass, and solid lines mark where you cannot. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.27: “Yellow broken line: Two-lane, two-way traffic, passing permitted.”

Who do Oklahoma's right-of-way laws apply to?

All people and vehicles, including bicyclists. A bicycle in an intersection is hit as hard as a car is, so the same rules of who goes first protect it. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.28: “The right-of-way laws apply to all people and all vehicles, including bicyclists.”

Who is responsible for avoiding a collision when children are playing near the street?

The driver. Children chase a ball or a puppy without looking, so the driver is the only one who can prevent the crash. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.28: “You are responsible for driving with extreme caution when children are present.”

A pedestrian with a guide dog is crossing the street ahead of you, away from any crosswalk. What must you do?

Give the person the right-of-way. A blind pedestrian cannot see your car coming, so the whole job of avoiding them falls to you. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.28: “Drivers must give the right-of-way to any blind person crossing the street.”

A funeral procession's lead car entered the intersection on green, and your light has now turned green. What should you do?

Yield until the procession has passed. Breaking up a procession at a light would separate mourners who are following the lead car to the cemetery. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.28: “When the funeral lead vehicle enters an intersection, the remaining vehicles in the procession may follow through the intersection regardless of any traffic control devices.”

You are entering a highway at a crossing with no signs or signals. What must you do?

Stop and yield to approaching traffic. With no sign or signal to sort out turns, the traffic already on the highway will not expect you to pull out. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.29: “Stop and yield to approaching traffic and go only when it’s safe to do so.”

An ambulance with its siren on comes up behind you. What should you do?

Pull to the right edge and stop. An emergency vehicle needs a clear lane fast, and drivers who all move the same way give it one. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.29: “Pull over to the right edge of the roadway, clear of intersections and stop until the emergency vehicle has passed.”

At a four-way stop, which vehicle has the right-of-way?

The one that entered first. A simple first-come rule means every driver can predict who goes next without arguing it out mid-intersection. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.29: “At four-way-stop intersections and at intersections without stop signs or signals, the car or truck that entered the intersection first has the right-of-way.”

When should you slow down for an intersection you are crossing?

Before you enter it. Braking in the middle of a crossing leaves you longest in the path of cross traffic and surprises the driver behind you. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.30: “Slow down before you enter, then increase your speed until you’ve cleared the intersection.”

You approach a stopped church bus with its red lights flashing. What must you do?

Stop and stay stopped. Children crossing to or from a bus are hidden by it and may run out without looking. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.30: “If you approach a bus with flashing red lights and/or showing a red “STOP” sign, it means that children are getting on or off the bus and you must stop.”

You approach a stationary vehicle with flashing lights on the shoulder. What does the Move Over Law require?

Move over a lane if safe, or slow down. Responders and stranded drivers work inches from moving traffic, and an empty lane beside them is the best protection. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.30: “When approaching any stationary vehicles with FLASHING LIGHTS pulled to the side of the road, drivers are REQUIRED to move over a lane, if safe to do so, or slow down and use caution.”

What is a Traffic Incident Management (TIM) scene?

Where responders are clearing a road incident. Knowing the term helps you recognize that tow trucks and road crews at a wreck are responders you must protect, too. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.31: “A TIM scene refers to a Traffic Incident Management (TIM) scene — the area where a roadway incident has occurred and where emergency responders, law enforcement, tow operators, or other personnel are actively working to manage and clear the situation.”

Who owns your Oklahoma driver license?

The State of Oklahoma. Because the state owns it, the state can take it back from a driver who breaks the law. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.13: “You do not own your license. It is the property of the State of Oklahoma and can be denied, canceled, suspended or revoked if you do not abide by the laws of the State of Oklahoma.”

Your license went through the wash and can no longer be read. What should you do?

Get a replacement license. A license that is missing or cannot be read cannot prove you may drive, so you need a new one quickly. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.13: “If your license is lost, destroyed or so damaged that the information is not readable, contact a licensed operator, your local driver examiner or apply online for a replacement license.”

For how long can an Oklahoma driver license be issued?

4 or 8 years. A fixed term makes drivers come back now and then so the state can keep their record and photo current. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.13: “Your license can be issued for either 4 or 8 years from the month in which you paid your fee for your license.”

A soldier stationed outside Oklahoma has a license that expired. When must it be renewed?

Within 60 days after returning. People serving far away cannot easily reach an office, so they get time to come home before the license must be renewed. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.13: “Military personnel stationed outside Oklahoma do not have to renew until 60 days after they return to Oklahoma, but they may renew by mail if they wish.”

After you move, how soon must you notify Service Oklahoma?

Within 10 days. The state mails legal notices to the address it has, so a stale address means you never get them. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.13: “Required by Law—When you move, you must notify Service Oklahoma within 10 days, either by reporting to your local licensed operator, online at our website or by writing to:”

Until what age is an Oklahoma license probationary?

Age 18. New drivers crash more, so the state keeps a closer eye on them while they prove themselves. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.13: “Until you are 18, your license is probationary (you are in a trial period to show you can drive safely and legally).”

You have no license or permit and drive with a licensed adult beside you. Who can be arrested?

Both you and the adult. An adult in the seat does not make an unlicensed driver legal, and the person who handed over the keys shares the blame. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.13: “Even if you have a licensed driver with you, you are breaking the law if you don’t have a license or Learner Permit.”

Where is the meaning of a restriction code on your Oklahoma license explained?

On the back of the license. A driver or officer can check what each code means right there, without looking anything up. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.14: “Restrictions are listed as a code on your license and explained on the back of the license.”

Your learner restriction is no longer needed. Who removes it?

A driver license examiner. Only an examiner can confirm the condition has changed, so the license matches what you truly need. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.14: “When a restriction is no longer needed, such as a learner or physical restriction or if it is in error, contact a driver license examiner at a Service Oklahoma location.”

What is the largest fine for driving without a valid Oklahoma license?

Up to $500. An unlicensed driver has never shown they know the rules, so the law sets a real cost on it. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.14: “On conviction, a fine of up to $500 or 6 months in jail or both.”

What is the longest jail term for violating a restriction on your Oklahoma license?

6 months. A restriction is there because the driver is unsafe without it, so ignoring one is treated seriously. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.14: “On conviction, a fine of up to $500, 6 months in jail or both.”

What must the car you are driving in Oklahoma have?

A current tag, registration and title. Current papers show the car belongs to someone and that its taxes and fees are paid. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.16: “The car you are driving must have a current license tag, registration and title.”

What does liability mean for an Oklahoma driver?

You answer for harm you or your car cause. Someone has to pay for the harm a crash does, and the law puts that on the driver who caused it. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.16: ““Liability” means that as a driver, you are legally and financially responsible for injury, death or property damages caused by you or your vehicle in a collision.”

During a traffic stop, what must an Oklahoma driver show the officer as proof of insurance?

A current security verification form. The officer has to know right away that whoever is hurt or whose car is damaged can be paid. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.16: “At the time of a collision or a traffic stop, the driver must show a current security verification form (proof of liability insurance) to the law enforcement officer.”

An uninsured driver is in a collision. What amount of property damage leads Service Oklahoma to suspend their license?

$500 or more. A driver with no insurance leaves crash victims to pay their own bills, so the state takes the license. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.16: “Collisions—Service Oklahoma will suspend the driver license of the uninsured driver and/ or owner of a vehicle involved in a collision where there is any injury or property damage of $500 or more.”

What may making a counterfeit security verification form result in?

A felony conviction. A fake insurance card hides a car that has no coverage, and the victims of its crashes go unpaid. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.16: “Counterfeit or Fraudulent Security Verification—To fraudulently create, manufacture or counterfeit a security verification form may result in a felony conviction which carries severe penalties in the form of both fines and/or imprisonment.”

Under Oklahoma's seat belt law, who must wear a seat belt?

The driver and every front-seat passenger. A belt keeps you in your seat and in control, instead of thrown into the dashboard or out of the car. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.17: “Every driver and front-seat passenger must wear a properly adjusted and fastened safety seat belt system.”

Under Oklahoma law, a child under what age must be protected by a child passenger restraint system?

8 years. Adult belts do not fit small bodies, and a child seat holds a young child where a belt alone would not. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.17: “Every driver, when transporting a child under 8 years of age in a motor vehicle operated on the roadways, streets or highways of this state, must provide for the protection of said child by properly using a child passenger restraint system.”

If your car has a passenger air bag, children under what age should ride in the back seat?

Age 12. An air bag opens with explosive force made for a grown adult, and it can kill a small child. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.17: “If your car is equipped with an airbag on the passenger side, the Highway Safety Administration recommends putting children under 12 in the back seat.”

Your license has been revoked. When may you legally drive again?

When it has been restored. A suspension means nothing if a driver can just apply again or keep driving the next day. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.69: “If your license is suspended or revoked, you can’t apply for a new license until you are reinstated and you can’t legally drive until your license is restored.”

Your older cousin wants to borrow your license. What does Oklahoma law say?

It is against the law. A license is how people trust who you are, and letting it lie for someone breaks that trust. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.69: “Your license is a legal document, the property of the state of Oklahoma and it is against the law to use it to misrepresent yourself in any way or to allow anyone else to use your license.”

How long could you spend in prison for using a fake ID in Oklahoma?

7 years. Fake IDs feed underage drinking and fraud, and the long sentence is meant to make the risk not worth it. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.69: “You could spend 7 years in prison”

Which traffic convictions go on your Oklahoma driving record?

Oklahoma and out-of-state convictions. A record that follows you everywhere stops a driver from escaping bad habits by crossing a state line. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.70: “Some collisions, any Oklahoma court conviction for a traffic violation or any out-of-state court conviction will be put on your driving record.”

A driver with a probationary license gets one moving traffic violation. What may Service Oklahoma do?

Cancel or suspend the license. One ticket can be the first sign of a risky new driver, so the state can act before a crash. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.71: “Service Oklahoma can, at its discretion, cancel or suspend your license for any moving traffic violation.”

For how long does Oklahoma law require the license to be revoked for a mandatory-revocation offense?

6 months to 3 years. Some crimes behind the wheel are so dangerous that the law takes the license, not just a fine. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.71: “State law requires that the driving privilege be revoked (withdrawn) for 6 months to 3 years for a conviction of any of the following:”

How many points within 5 years will get an Oklahoma license suspended?

10 or more. Points add up small mistakes until they show a pattern that is likely to end in a crash. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.71: “If you accumulate 10 or more points within 5 years, your license will be suspended.”

How many points does a reckless driving conviction add to an Oklahoma record?

4 points. Reckless driving puts others in danger on purpose, so it costs more points than most tickets. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.71: “Reckless driving.............................................................................................................................................................................. 4”

How many points come off an Oklahoma record for each 12-month period with no pointable convictions?

2 points. Rewarding a clean year gives drivers a reason to keep driving safely after a ticket. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.72: “Two (2) points are deducted for each 12-month period in which there are no convictions of any pointable traffic violations.”

What is Oklahoma's minimum liability coverage for injury or death of one person?

$25,000. A serious injury costs a lot, and the minimum makes sure there is some money to pay the person hurt. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.72: “$25,000 for injury or death of one person”

What is the longest jail term for failing to produce proof of insurance to an officer in Oklahoma?

30 days. Driving uninsured leaves crash victims to pay their own bills, so the law adds jail and suspension to the fine. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.72: “A fine of up to $250, 30 days in jail or both, PLUS suspension of license and registration upon conviction of failure to comply with the Compulsory Insurance Law or failure to produce proof of insurance to a law enforcement officer upon request.”

On a dirt or gravel road with no lane lines, where are you expected to drive?

Always in the proper lane, marked or not. Gravel and rural roads still carry oncoming cars, and keeping to your side is what keeps you out of their way. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.32: “You are expected to always drive in the proper lane, whether the lane is marked or not.”

What do white dashed lines between two lanes tell you?

Traffic runs in the same direction; you may pass when safe. White lines separate lanes going your way, so the danger in changing lanes comes from beside and behind you, not head-on. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.32: “White Dashes—Traffic moves in the same direction on each side of the white dashes. Passing is permitted when it’s safe.”

Before changing lanes, which way should you look over your shoulder?

In the direction you will be moving. Mirrors leave blind spots beside your car, and a quick look over your shoulder is what finds the car hiding there. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.33: “Never change lanes until you are sure it’s safe.”

On a limited-access highway, where may you enter or leave the roadway?

Only at entrances and exits called interchanges. With no crossing traffic, nobody pulls across your path at high speed, which is why these roads are safer. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.33: ““Limited access” means that you enter or leave the roadway only at entrances and exits, called interchanges, without ever crossing the path of other traffic.”

What should you do if your car cannot safely reach the expressway's minimum speed?

Stay off the expressway. A car that cannot keep up becomes a slow obstacle that fast traffic comes up on before drivers can react. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.33: “If your car is not in good condition or if you can’t or don’t want to drive at or above the minimum speed limit, don’t use the expressway.”

You are driving slower than the other expressway traffic. Which lane should you use?

The right-hand lane. Keeping slow cars right and faster cars left means fewer drivers have to pass on the wrong side. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.33: “Use the right-hand lane when you’re driving slower than the other traffic.”

How far ahead should you watch on an expressway for cars braking, entering and exiting?

15-20 seconds. At highway speed trouble arrives fast, and looking far ahead gives you time to react before you reach it. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.34: “Watch 15-20 seconds ahead for cars braking, entering and exiting.”

Your car breaks down on the expressway. Where should you pull off?

To the extreme right shoulder, away from traffic. The far right shoulder puts the most distance between you and traffic, and flashers help drivers see you in time. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.34: “If you have a breakdown, an emergency or must stop for some reason, signal, then pull off to the extreme right shoulder away from moving traffic where it’s safe.”

When you enter an expressway, who must yield?

You, to vehicles already on the expressway. Traffic on the expressway is moving fast and has nowhere to go, so the merging driver must fit into a gap. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.34: “You must yield to vehicles already on the expressway.”

When should you move into the proper lane to leave an expressway?

Well in advance of the exit. A last-second dive across lanes to an exit cuts off drivers who had no warning. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.34: “Move to the proper lane well in advance of the exit, especially in heavy traffic.”

On a road with four or more lanes, what may you not do in the left lane?

Impede the normal flow of traffic. A slow car in the left lane forces faster drivers to pass on the right or tailgate, and both cause crashes. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.35: “On a roadway that is divided into four or more lanes, a vehicle cannot impede the normal flow of traffic by driving in the left lane.”

Before passing on the left, how much clear roadway should you see ahead?

At least 200 feet. You need room to get past and back in, and a pass started too short ends with you facing oncoming traffic. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.35: “Check ahead for at least 200 feet of clear roadway without a “No Passing Zone.””

When may you pass on the right on a two-way road?

When it has 2 or more lanes each way and no obstructions. With a full lane on the right and nothing parked in it, you can pass without leaving the road. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.35: “The road is wide enough for two or more lanes in each direction and there are no parked cars or other obstructions on the roadway.”

A solid yellow line and a dashed yellow line divide the road. When may you not pass?

When the solid line is on your side. The solid line is painted on your side where your view ahead is too short to pass safely. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.35: “When the solid yellow line is in your lane, whether there are two yellow lines or a single solid line and a dashed line.”

Another car is passing you on the left. What should you do?

Stay in your lane and move right. Moving right widens the gap the passing car has to fit through. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.35: “Stay in your lane and move right if being passed on the left.”

Is it legal to make a turn without signaling?

No, it is illegal. Other drivers cannot read your mind, and an unsignaled turn gives them no chance to slow or steer clear. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.36: “It is illegal to turn without signaling.”

What arm signal shows a left turn?

Arm and hand extended straight out. When turn lights fail or cannot be seen, a clear arm signal still tells others what you will do. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.36: “LEFT TURN Arm and hand extended straight out”

The faster traffic is moving, when should you move into the lane for your turn?

Sooner. Fast traffic leaves smaller gaps and less time, so a late lane change before a turn is harder and riskier. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.36: “Move into the correct lane as soon as possible. The faster the traffic is moving, the sooner you should move into the proper lane.”

You reach your turn but are not in the proper lane. What should you do?

Go on to the next intersection and turn from there. Swinging across lanes to make a turn you are not set up for cuts off the drivers beside you. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.36: “If you aren’t in the proper lane, drive to the next intersection and make the turn from the proper lane there.”

As you prepare for a left turn on a two-way street, where should you position your car?

Close to the centerline, without crossing it. Hugging the centerline keeps room for cars on your right, but crossing it puts you in the oncoming lane. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.37: “Take care to keep close to the centerline, but don't cross it.”

On a one-way street, which lane should you turn from?

The lane nearest the curb on that side. Turning from the curb lane means you never cross another lane of traffic to make the turn. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.38: “When you are turning on one-way or divided streets, always turn from the lane nearest the curb.”

Where should your left hand hold the steering wheel when backing?

At 12 o’clock. Turning your body to look out the back shows far more than a mirror and keeps one hand where it can steer. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.39: “Grasp the steering wheel at the 12 o’clock position with your left hand.”

What does Oklahoma's Basic Speed Rule require of your speed?

A speed safe for the current conditions. A speed limit is set for a dry, clear day; the road you are on right now may be wet, dark or crowded. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.40: “Consider all the conditions that affect your driving, drive at a speed that is safe for those conditions and be able to stop without hitting anyone.”

What does the Basic Speed Rule say about driving slowly?

Not so slowly that you block normal traffic. A car crawling far below the flow forces others to brake hard and pass, which causes crashes too. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.40: “You must not drive so slowly that you block, hinder or interfere with other vehicles moving at normal speeds.”

What is the maximum penalty in Oklahoma upon conviction of speeding?

Up to $654 and 30 days in jail. A fine and jail time this large make the point that speeding puts other people's lives at risk. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.40: “Upon conviction of speeding, you may be fined up to $654.00 and sentenced to 30 days in jail.”

Unless otherwise posted, what is the speed limit on an Oklahoma controlled access highway?

75 mph. Controlled access highways have no cross traffic or driveways, which is why they carry a higher limit. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.41: “Controlled access highways 75 mph”

Who can set the speed limits on Oklahoma city and town streets?

The cities and towns themselves. The limit can drop from one block to the next near homes and schools, and only the sign tells you. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.41: “Under state law, cities and towns can set their own speed limits.”

What is the recommended speed when turning?

10 mph or less. A car turning fast can slide wide into another lane or fail to stop for someone in the crosswalk. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.41: “Recommended speed when turning 10 mph or less.”

Why does night driving present a serious danger?

The distance you can see clearly is reduced. Dark animals, objects and people in dark clothes stay hidden until you are close, leaving little time to stop. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.41: “The distance that you can see clearly is greatly reduced.”

When should you not wear sunglasses or colored glasses while driving?

At night or on dark days. Tinted lenses cut the little light there is, so a person or animal on a dark road shows up even later. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.41: “Don’t wear sunglasses or colored glasses when driving at night or on dark days.”

Which of these does the manual give as an example of road rage?

Cutting off other vehicles. Knowing the warning signs lets you spot an aggressive driver early and keep your distance. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.41: “Examples of road rage include tailgating, cutting off other vehicles, careless lane changes, speeding and running red lights.”

Which of these does the manual list as something your stopping distance depends on?

The weight of your vehicle. A heavier car or worn brakes need more road to stop, so leave more room than you think you need. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.42: “There is no sure way to tell exactly how long it will take you to stop at a certain speed.”

About how long does perception (seeing or hearing a danger) take?

About .5 seconds. Even a half second of seeing the danger carries the car many feet before you have done anything. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.42: “Perception About .5 seconds See/hear danger”

How should you normally apply your brakes?

Slowly and evenly. Smooth braking keeps the tires gripping and gives the driver behind you time to slow down too. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.43: “You should apply your brakes slowly and evenly.”

What should you do if you have a flat tire or a blowout?

Ease off the gas and brake cautiously. Hard braking on a blown tire can pull the car sideways and out of control. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.43: “Take your foot off the gas pedal and apply your brakes cautiously.”

With standard brakes, when does maximum braking come?

Just before the wheels lock. A sliding tire grips less than a rolling one, so a locked wheel takes longer to stop and cannot steer. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.43: “Maximum braking comes just before the wheels lock and stop rotating.”

What is black ice?

A clear icy coating you can't see. Black ice makes the road look merely wet, so drivers keep their speed until the car slides. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.43: “You must be extremely careful on ice, especially on “black ice,” a clear icy coating on the road surface that you can’t see.”

As a general rule, what should you do if your car starts to skid?

Ease off the brake and steer into the skid. Steering where the back of the car is going lets the tires roll and grip again. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.43: “As a general rule, if the car starts to skid, take your foot off the brake and turn the steering wheel in the direction of the skid if you can do so without running off the road, hitting something or steering into oncoming traffic.”

When are roads likely to be very slick in rain?

Just after it begins to rain. Drivers expect a soaked road to be the worst, but the first minutes of rain are often more slippery. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.44: “The roads are likely to be very slick just after it begins to rain or drizzle.”

What is hydroplaning?

Tires riding on a film of water. With water under the tires there is nothing to grip, so steering and braking stop working. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.44: “Hydroplaning means that your tires lose contact with the road surface and ride on the film of water.”

What should you do in a heavy downpour?

Slow down or pull off the road. In a downpour you cannot see far and your tires can lose the road, so waiting it out is safer. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.44: “Slow down or pull off the road in a heavy downpour.”

What is the cushion of safety the manual says to give yourself?

Open space in front, behind and on the sides. Open space around you is room to steer or stop when someone else makes a mistake. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.44: “You should always give yourself a “cushion of safety,” having open space in front, behind and on the sides.”

Traveling in a caravan outside a business or residential area, how much space should you leave between each vehicle?

At least 200 feet. A tight line of cars with no gaps traps other drivers who need to merge in or cross. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.44: “If you are traveling in a caravan or motorcade (such as a funeral procession) outside of a business or residential area, leave at least 200 feet between each vehicle so other cars or trucks can enter the line safely.”

In general, how does a truck's stopping compare with a car's?

It takes longer, because of its size. A loaded truck carries far more weight, and its brakes need more road to bring that weight to a stop. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.44: “Trucks take longer to stop than cars because of their size.”

To avoid rear-end collisions, how far down the line should you watch for brake lights?

The 4 or 5 cars ahead. Seeing brake lights far ahead tells you of a slowdown before the car right in front of you brakes. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.45: “Watch for brake lights on the four or five cars down the line.”

Someone is tailgating you. What does the manual advise?

Slow down and encourage them to pass. Letting a tailgater go by puts the danger in front of you, where you can see it. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.45: “Slow down and encourage the driver behind you to pass.”

When you leave your car, what gear should it be in?

Low, reverse or park. An improperly parked car can roll, gain speed and kill someone, with no one inside to stop it. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.46: “Put the gear in low, reverse or “park.””

Where parking on a highway is permitted, where should you park?

Completely off the pavement. A car left even partly in a lane is a target for drivers coming up at highway speed. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.46: “Where parking is permitted, signal, slow down and drive completely off the pavement or the main traveled part of the roadway.”

When entering an angle parking space, what must you make sure of before you steer in?

That your rear will clear the parked car. Turning in too early swings your back end into the car beside the space. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.46: “Make sure the rear of your car will clear the parked car.”

When parallel parking, how close to the curb must your car be?

Within 18 inches. A car parked far from the curb sticks out into the lane where passing traffic can hit it. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.47: “Unless there are signs that prohibit parking or a yellow-painted curb, you may park parallel to any curb and within 18 inches of the curb.”

When parking on a hill, how close to the curb should you stop?

Within 6 inches. Being close to the curb lets your turned wheels rest against it, so the curb can stop a rolling car. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.47: “Parallel park as in the previous section, but stop within six inches of the curb.”

When pulling out from a curb on a hill, who has the right-of-way?

The drivers already traveling. Cars already moving cannot easily stop for you, so the one pulling out is the one who must wait. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.48: “It will be your responsibility to wait for an opening and move safely into the proper lane, as the drivers already traveling have the right-of-way.”

Who may an Oklahoma disabled parking permit be issued to?

A disabled resident who drives or rides. The permit follows the person, not the car, so a disabled passenger can use it in any vehicle they ride in. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.49: “Service Oklahoma issues a transferable parking permit to physically disabled residents who may be the driver or the passenger of any vehicle.”

When may you stop in one of Oklahoma's no-parking places?

When a police officer directs you to. A police officer may need you to stop somewhere unusual to clear a crash or a hazard. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.49: “No person shall stop, park or leave a vehicle unattended except when necessary to avoid conflict with other traffic or in compliance of law or the directions of a police officer or traffic-controlled device in any of the places.”

Which of these people does the Oklahoma manual count as a pedestrian?

A person on a skateboard. A skater or wheelchair user moves at walking pace and has no metal around them, so they get the same care as someone on foot. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.50: ““Pedestrians” include people walking, skateboarders, in-line or roller skaters and people with disabilities who use wheelchairs, walkers, tricycles or similar supports.”

You are pulling out of a driveway and someone is walking along the sidewalk. What must you do?

Yield to the person walking. A driver backing or nosing out of a driveway often looks only at the street and misses the person walking across. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.50: “Yield to pedestrians using the sidewalk when you’re entering or leaving a driveway or alley.”

You have stopped for a pedestrian on a four-lane street. How can you warn the drivers behind you?

Tap your brakes several times. Drivers in the next lane cannot see the walker your car is hiding, and flashing brake lights tell them something is wrong. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.50: “If you are the driver in the stopped car, do everything you can to help protect that girl, such as warning the drivers behind you with a “stop” hand signal or with several taps on your brakes, flashing your brake lights.”

Compared with a driver, what rights and responsibilities does a bicyclist have on the street?

The same ones you have. A rider who belongs on the road is easier to plan around than one a driver expects to get out of the way. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.51: “Bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities on the streets that you do and in most cases, they must share the lane.”

When you pass a bicycle going your way, what is the least room you must leave?

3 feet. A rider may wobble around a pothole or a gust of wind, and a mirror at arm's length can knock them down. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.51: “Allow at least 3 feet of room when passing a bicycle rider.”

What should you expect of a bicycle rider sharing the road with you?

That they may swerve suddenly. A bike has no room to go around trouble the way a car does, so the rider swerves, often into your path. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.51: “When you’re sharing the road with bicycles, you should always expect the rider to make sudden moves.”

On a two-lane road, a car is coming toward you as you reach a bicyclist. What should you do?

Slow down and let the car go by first. Squeezing between a bike and an oncoming car leaves no room if either one moves even a little. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.51: “Avoid passing between a bicyclist and oncoming vehicles on a two-lane road.”

What is a bicycle ridden at night required to have?

A front light and a rear reflector. A small light can be lost in the glare of oncoming headlights, so you have to look for riders at the road's edge. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.51: “They are required to have a front light and rear reflector, but lights from approaching traffic may make them hard to see.”

You are about to turn right and a bicyclist is riding near the curb. What should you do?

Merge into the bike traffic first. A car that turns right across a rider going straight is the classic way a bike gets hit at a corner. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.51: “Merge with bicycle traffic when preparing for a right turn.”

When must a bicycle rider ride as far right in the lane as possible?

Only when a car and bike fit side by side. Hugging the edge of a lane too narrow to share only invites drivers to squeeze past too close. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.52: “Bicycle riders are required to ride as far right in the lane as possible only when the lane can be safely shared by a car and a bicycle, side by side.”

You see a bicycle flying a tall flag on a pole. What may it mean?

The rider may have impaired hearing. A rider who cannot hear your engine will not know you are there, so a tap on the horn may not warn them. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.52: “If you see this flag on a bicycle, slow down; the bicycle rider may have impaired hearing.”

Under Oklahoma's bicycle rules, what may a cyclist do at a stop sign when no danger is present?

Slow down, then go on without stopping. Knowing a rider may roll through an empty stop sign keeps you from being surprised when they do. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.52: “Cyclists must slow down when approaching a stop sign.”

In Oklahoma's bicycle rules, what is an immediate hazard?

A vehicle close or fast enough to hit the rider. A rider has to judge whether your car is close or fast enough to hit them before going through a stop. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.52: “Immediate Hazard refers to a vehicle approaching a bicyclist at a speed or distance that could lead to a potential collision.”

Under Oklahoma's bicycle rules, what may a cyclist do at a red light once stopped, if it is safe?

Proceed through the red light. Some bike-sized riders never trip a signal, so the law lets them go once they have stopped and checked. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.52: “Cyclists must stop at a red light before entering the intersection.”

Why is it hard for a driver to judge a motorcycle's distance and speed?

Its profile is narrow and short. Most car and motorcycle crashes happen when a driver turns in front of a rider they never noticed. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.53: “The profile of a motorcycle is narrow and the body is short, making it harder to see and making it harder for a driver to estimate its distance and speed.”

May you share a lane with a motorcycle?

No; it has the right to the whole lane. A rider needs the full width of the lane to steer around potholes and blasts of wind from passing vehicles. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.53: “Motorcycles have the right to use the lane.”

Why must you not pass a motorcycle too close or too fast?

The blast of air can blow it out of control. A light bike is pushed sideways by the wall of air a car or truck shoves ahead of it. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.53: “Pass as you would pass a car and don’t pass too close or too fast, as the blast of air can blow a motorcycle out of control.”

How far back should you stay when following a truck?

Far enough to see the road ahead. Riding close behind a truck hides every hazard ahead of it until the truck swerves or brakes. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.54: “Stay far enough back so you can see the roadway ahead clearly.”

How far behind a truck can its rear blind spot reach?

Up to 200 feet. A car tucked close behind a truck is invisible to its driver, who may brake or back up without knowing you are there. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.54: “A truck’s blind spots are immediately in front on either side of the cab and up to 200 feet in the rear.”

How can you let a truck driver know you are about to pass?

Blink your headlights. A driver who knows you are coming will keep to the far side of the lane and give you room. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.54: “Let the driver know you are passing by blinking your headlights, especially at night.”

A truck is passing you. What should you do?

Keep to the far side and slow slightly. Speeding up traps the truck beside you, where a long trailer has nowhere safe to go. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.54: “When a truck passes you, you can help the driver by keeping to the far side of your lane and reducing your speed slightly.”

A truck ahead with its right signal on leaves a gap on its right side. What should you do?

Stay out of the gap behind it. A car between the truck and the curb is out of the driver's view and can be crunched or sideswiped as the trailer swings in. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.55: “Trucks make wide right turns and often must leave an open space on the right side.”

A truck is blocking the road while it gets ready to back into a loading dock. What should you do?

Wait patiently until it finishes. Crossing behind a backing truck puts you right where its driver cannot see, which makes it a high-collision situation. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.55: “Never try to cross behind a truck when it’s preparing to back up.”

About how much distance does a train going 55 mph need to stop?

A mile or more. A train cannot swerve and cannot stop in time, so the only one who can prevent the crash is you. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.55: “A train traveling at 55 mph takes a mile or more to stop.”

When you must stop for a train at a crossing, what is the closest you may stop to the nearest rail?

15 feet. Stopping too close leaves you in reach of the train's overhang; stopping too far back invites others to pull around you. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.56: “Whenever any person driving a vehicle approaches a railroad grade crossing, the driver of such vehicle shall stop within 50 feet but not less than 15 feet from the nearest rail of such railroad and shall not proceed until they can do so safely when:”

While you wait for a passing train, where should your car be?

Behind the painted stop line. The stop line marks where a car is safely clear of the train as it goes by. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.56: “Always stay behind the painted stop line while waiting for a passing train.”

When should you expect a train at a railroad crossing?

On any track at any time. Trains do not keep a timetable a driver can count on, and an empty crossing yesterday says nothing about today. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.57: “Expect a train on any track at any time.”

Your car is stalled on the tracks and the warning lights start to flash. About how long may you have to escape?

20 seconds. Twenty seconds is not enough to restart a car or push it off the tracks, but it is enough to run. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.57: “If your vehicle is physically on the train tracks at a grade crossing and the lights begin to flash, you may only have 20 seconds to escape before the train makes it to your location.”

Which of these vehicles must stop at highway-railway crossings?

A truck carrying hazardous materials. A bus full of people or a tanker of chemicals stops at every crossing, and a driver who expects it will not run into the back of it. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.57: “Trucks carrying hazardous materials”

What should you expect of farm equipment on a rural highway?

It may use more than one lane. Coming over a hill to find a wide combine taking up your lane leaves you very little time to stop. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.58: “The equipment can be very large and use more than one traffic lane.”

What rights do animal-drawn vehicles have on Oklahoma roads?

The same as a motor vehicle. A buggy and its riders have no protection in a crash, so a driver has to give them the same room as any car. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.58: “They have the same rights to use the road as a motor vehicle and must follow the same rules of the road.”

How close to an oncoming vehicle must you be when you switch your high beams to low beams?

Within 1000 feet. High beams shining into an oncoming driver’s eyes can blind them for a moment, just as they reach you. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.59: “Dim your high beam headlights to low beams within 1000 feet of an oncoming vehicle or within 600 feet of the vehicle you are following.”

How long after sunset must you have your headlights on?

30 minutes. Dusk and dawn light fools the eye, and lights help others see your car before it is fully dark. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.59: “Beginning 30 minutes after sunset and 30 minutes before sunrise.”

When does the manual say to use your high beams?

In open country with no cars nearby. High beams light the road much farther ahead, which matters most on dark roads with no streetlights. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.59: “Use high beams in open country if there are no other cars nearby.”

With a manual transmission, below what speed should you hold the clutch all the way down as you come to a stop?

10 mph. If the clutch is still engaged as the car nearly stops, the engine stalls and you can lose smooth control. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.59: “Hold the clutch pedal all the way down when starting the motor, shifting gears and when your speed drops below 10 mph as you’re coming to a stop.”

What does the manual say to check about the front seat before you drive?

Nothing on it can fall and distract you. A bag sliding under the pedals or onto the floor pulls your eyes and hands away at the worst moment. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.59: “Be sure there’s nothing on the front seat that can fall on the floor and distract you.”

How can you tell that carbon monoxide is in your car?

You cannot see, smell or taste it. Because nothing warns your senses, the gas can build up in the car until you are too drowsy to react. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.60: “You can’t see, smell or taste it, but carbon monoxide gas from your engine can kill you.”

Before driving out of state on a trip, what must you have in your vehicle?

A physical copy of insurance and registration. An officer in another state may ask for proof, and a phone with no signal or a dead battery cannot show it. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.60: “Before starting on a vacation or business trip, be sure you have a physical copy of your vehicle insurance and registration in your vehicle in accordance with Oklahoma law.”

What does Oklahoma law require drivers to give the road?

Their full attention. A car at highway speed covers a long way in a few seconds, so a glance away can miss a hazard. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.60: “Oklahoma law requires drivers to give their full attention to the road.”

What does the manual advise before making a phone call from your car?

Pull off the road first. A call while parked takes nothing from your driving, while a call on the move splits your attention. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.61: “Whenever possible, pull off the road before calling from your car.”

An animal suddenly runs in front of your car. What does the manual say not to do?

Swerve to avoid hitting it. A sharp swerve can roll the car or send it into a tree or oncoming traffic, which is far worse than the animal. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.61: “DO NOT swerve to avoid hitting the animal.”

Most vehicles will be swept away by running water less than how deep?

2 feet. Moving water pushes hard on the side of a car and lifts it, so it can carry the car off the road. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.62: “Most vehicles will be swept away by less than 2 feet (24 inches) of running water.”

You come to a road covered by flood water. What does the manual tell you to do?

Turn around and find another way. You cannot tell how deep or fast the water is from the driver’s seat, and a car can be swept off in seconds. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.63: “If you encounter a flooded roadway, TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN.”

You are in a collision that causes property damage. What is the first step the manual lists?

Stop and call law enforcement. Officers secure the scene and get medical help moving, and leaving the scene of a crash is never allowed. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.63: “If you are involved in a collision that results in death, injury or property damage, you must – Remain Calm.”

Which of these can slow your reaction time and impair your driving?

Cold medicine. A medicine that is legal and common can still make you slow or drowsy at the wheel. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.64: “But not everyone realizes that many prescription drugs and even over-the-counter drugs (such as cold, hay fever, pain medications and diet pills) can slow your reaction time, make you dizzy or nervous and impair (damage, weaken or worsen) your concentration and vision.”

Which driving skill does the manual say alcohol affects almost immediately?

Your judgment. Judgment is what tells you when to stop drinking or not drive, so it is lost first, right when you need it. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.64: “Driving skills, especially your judgment, are affected almost immediately.”

By driving a motor vehicle in Oklahoma, what have you agreed to?

Take tests for blood alcohol content. Agreeing in advance lets officers test a driver quickly, before the alcohol in the blood wears off. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.65: “The very act of driving or being in actual physical control of a motor vehicle means that you have agreed to take one or more tests to determine your blood alcohol content (BAC).”

Can a driver be convicted of DUI in Oklahoma without a BAC test?

Yes, on the officer’s observations. A driver can be dangerous long before reaching the legal limit, and the officer’s eyes see that danger. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.65: “Observations and information gathered by the arresting officer are also evidence that may be used in court and can result in a conviction without a BAC test.”

What does DUI stand for?

Driving Under the Influence. Naming drugs as well as alcohol makes clear that any substance that impairs you counts. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.65: “DUI stands for “Driving Under the Influence” and means that a driver is intoxicated by drugs or alcohol or both.”

After a first DUI conviction, how long is the license suspended?

180 days. Taking the license for half a year keeps a convicted drunk driver off the road while habits change. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.66: “For 180 days on the first revocation”

You are not sure whether a medicine is safe to take before driving. Who does the manual say to ask?

A pharmacist or doctor. The label is where the maker warns you a medicine can make you sleepy, and that warning applies to driving. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.66: “If you aren’t sure if it’s safe to take the drug and drive, ask a pharmacist or doctor.”

How much alcohol may a driver under 21 legally have in their blood or breath in Oklahoma?

No measurable amount. Young drivers are new to both driving and drinking, so the law allows them no alcohol at all behind the wheel. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.67: “Has ANY measurable quantity of alcohol in the person’s blood or breath at the time a test is administered.”

If you are under 18 and commit an alcohol-related offense, what is the court required to do?

Notify Service Oklahoma. Linking the court to the license office means an alcohol or drug offense always reaches your driving record. Oklahoma Driver Manual, p.67: “If you are under the age of 18, a court is required to notify Service Oklahoma of any offense that you commit, including any crime, violation, infraction, traffic offense or other offense involving or relating to the possession, use, sale, purchase, transportation, distribution, manufacture or consumption of beer, alcohol or any beverage containing alcohol:”
