Animals — Oregon Permit Test
Animals on the Oregon permit test — 2 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Stop your vehicle if a person riding on horseback or leading an animal raises a hand, or if it is obvious the animal is frightened, unless stopping would cause a collision — a raised hand means the animal is frightened, and you must not use your horn or make other loud, sudden noises near it.
The horn is the instinctive thing to do and the exact wrong one: the rider is asking for quiet, not for warning.
A raised hand means the animal is frightened. Do not use your horn or make other loud, sudden noises near the animal.
If you hit and injure a domestic animal, stop and make a reasonable effort to check its injuries, immediately report the injury to the animal's owner, and report the incident to local law enforcement if you cannot find them.
An injured animal left at the roadside is both a welfare matter and a hazard for the next driver, and the duty does not end because the owner is absent.
Immediately report the injury to the animal’s owner. If you are unable to locate the owner you must report the incident to local law enforcement.
On the test
What does a raised hand from a person on horseback mean?
The animal is frightened. The horn is the instinctive thing to do and the exact wrong one: the rider is asking for quiet, not for warning. 2026-2027 Oregon Driver Manual, p.75: “A raised hand means the animal is frightened. Do not use your horn or make other loud, sudden noises near the animal.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
