Passing on the right — Oregon Permit Test

Passing on the right on the Oregon permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

You may pass on the right only where the vehicle you are passing is making or has signaled a left turn, or where the road has two or more lanes in your direction and that vehicle is in the left lane.

Other drivers do not expect to be passed on the right, so the two cases where it is allowed are the two where they have shown you what they are doing.

The vehicle you are passing is making or has signaled for a left turn.

2026-2027 Oregon Driver Manual, p.33

When passing on the right around a vehicle turning left there must be enough space to pass without leaving the paved portion of the road or driving in a bike lane, and the road in front of that vehicle must be clear.

Leaving the pavement or using the bike lane turns a lawful pass into a violation, and the bike lane is where a cyclist is entitled to be.

There must be sufficient space to the right for you to pass without leaving the paved portion of the road or driving in a bike lane. The road in front of the vehicle you are passing must be clear.

When another driver starts to pass you, stay to the right and help by checking oncoming traffic and adjusting your speed so they can return to the right lane as soon as possible.

Speeding up while being passed strands the other driver in the oncoming lane, which is the collision the pass was trying to avoid.

When another driver starts to pass, stay to the right. You can help the other driver pass you safely by checking oncoming traffic and adjusting your speed to let the vehicle move back into the right lane as soon as possible.

2026-2027 Oregon Driver Manual, p.33

The law prohibits using your hands or lights to signal another driver when to pass.

Waving somebody through makes you responsible for a gap you cannot judge from where you sit, and the law removes the temptation.

Do not use your hands or lights to signal other drivers when to pass. The law prohibits flashing any of your signals at drivers to let them know when to pass.

On the test

When may an Oregon driver pass on the right?

When the vehicle ahead has signaled a left turn. Other drivers do not expect to be passed on the right, so the two cases where it is allowed are the two where they have shown you what they are doing. 2026-2027 Oregon Driver Manual, p.33: “The vehicle you are passing is making or has signaled for a left turn.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
