Parking — South Carolina Permit Test

Parking on the South Carolina permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

A vehicle with a disability plate or placard may use a disability space only when driven by or carrying the person named on its registration.

Using the placard without that person takes a space from someone who genuinely needs it.

Vehicles displaying a disability license plate or placard may park in designated spaces for people with disabilities, but only if that vehicle is driven by or transporting the person with the disability whose name is on the license plate registration or placard registration certificate.

South Carolina Driver's Manual, p.85

When parking along a roadway, do not park more than 18 inches from the curb or edge of the pavement.

A car left further out sticks into the travel lane and becomes an obstruction for passing traffic.

Do not park more than 18 inches from the curb or edge of pavement.

South Carolina Driver's Manual, p.86

Some parking restrictions are shown by colored curb markings, so check the curb as well as the signs.

A driver who only reads signs can park illegally beside a painted curb.

Some parking restrictions are indicated by colored curb markings.

Leaving a perpendicular or angle space, move straight back until your front bumper clears the vehicle parked beside you before turning the wheel.

Turning too early swings the front corner of your car into the car next to you.

Continue to check traffic and move straight back until your front bumper clears the vehicle parked beside you.

South Carolina Driver's Manual, p.86

Entering a parallel space, back up until your front bumper is in line with the rear bumper of the car you are parking behind, then steer to center.

That point gives your front end room to swing in without clipping the car ahead.

Continue backing up until your front bumper is in line with the rear bumper of the vehicle you are parking behind.

South Carolina Driver's Manual, p.87

Leaving a parallel space, move into the lane of traffic when your car's door clears the rear bumper of the vehicle parked ahead.

Pulling out too early hooks your front corner on the parked car ahead.

Move forward into the appropriate lane of traffic when the door of the vehicle clears the rear bumper of the vehicle parked ahead of you.

On the test

When may a car with a disability placard use a disability parking space?

Only when carrying the person named on it. Using the placard without that person takes a space from someone who genuinely needs it. South Carolina Driver's Manual, p.85: “Vehicles displaying a disability license plate or placard may park in designated spaces for people with disabilities, but only if that vehicle is driven by or transporting the person with the disability whose name is on the license plate registration or placard registration certificate.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
