Car seat guide — South Dakota Permit Test
Car seat guide on the South Dakota permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Infant seats are for children up to 20 pounds and always face rearward.
A tiny baby facing forward has its head thrown forward with force its neck cannot take.
For children up to 20 pounds
An infant seat should recline 30 degrees.
A baby sitting too upright can slump forward and choke off its own airway.
Recline 30 degrees
Toddler or convertible car seats are for infants and children up to 40 pounds: reclined and facing rearward for infants, upright and facing forward for toddlers.
A seat used the wrong way round for the child’s age fails to hold them in a crash.
For toddlers, upright and forward facing
Booster seats are for toddlers at least 30 pounds; a booster without a shield must be used with a tethered harness or shoulder straps, and one with a shield can be used with just a lap belt.
A shieldless booster held only by a lap belt lets the child fold forward and hit the seat ahead.
Must be used with a tethered harness or shoulder straps if it doesn’t have a shield
On the test
According to the car seat guide, infant seats are for children up to what weight?
20 pounds. A tiny baby facing forward has its head thrown forward with force its neck cannot take. South Dakota Driver License Manual, p.27: “For children up to 20 pounds”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
