Driver improvement points — Tennessee Permit Test
Driver improvement points on the Tennessee permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Each traffic violation or crash on your driving record is given a point value.
Points add up over time. Several small tickets can cost your license as surely as one big one.
Each traffic violation or crash on a driver’s record is given a point value.
Adult drivers who build up 12 or more points within 12 months receive a notice of proposed suspension.
A few speeding tickets in one year can bring you close to losing your license as an adult.
Adult drivers (18 years of age or older) who accumulate 12 or more points within a 12-month period receive a notice of proposed suspension.
Juvenile drivers under 18 who build up 6 or more points within 12 months receive a notice of proposed suspension.
A teen gets half the room an adult does. Two speeding tickets can be enough to put the license at risk.
Juvenile drivers (less than 18 years of age) who accumulate 6 or more points within a 12-month period receive a notice of proposed suspension.
An advisory letter is mailed to any juvenile driver with 1 to 5 points on their record within 12 months.
The letter is a warning shot. It tells a teen driver to slow down before the next ticket brings a suspension.
To keep juvenile drivers aware of the possibility of losing their driving privileges, an advisory letter is mailed to any licensee having 1 to 5 points on his/her driving record within any 12 months.
Drivers may take a Defensive Driving Course to avoid or shorten a suspension, but only once in any 5-year period.
The course is a one-time way out. Use it and keep collecting points, and the next suspension has no escape.
However, the Defensive Driving Course option is only available once in any five-year period.
On the test
How does the Department of Safety track traffic violations and crashes on your record?
Each is given a point value. Points add up over time. Several small tickets can cost your license as surely as one big one. Tennessee Comprehensive Driver License Manual, p.86: “Each traffic violation or crash on a driver’s record is given a point value.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
