Renewing a license — Texas Permit Test

Renewing a license on the Texas permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

A Texas driver license must be renewed every eight years.

It is long enough that most drivers forget when theirs runs out. The renewal notice is a courtesy, not a guarantee.

Texas Driver Handbook, p.10

A person must appear at a driver license office at least once every sixteen years for a vision exam and to update the photo, signature, and fingerprints.

Faces and eyesight change over two renewals. Sixteen years is the longest Texas will go on a photograph.

A person must appear in a driver license office at least once every sixteen (16) years for a vision exam and to update the photo, signature and fingerprints

Texas Driver Handbook, p.10

If a renewal notice does not arrive, it remains the driver's responsibility to renew the license.

The notice is posted to the last address you gave. Nothing about it being lost makes an expired license legal.

If you do not receive this courtesy notice, it remains your responsibility to renew your license

Texas Driver Handbook, p.9

A person whose license is suspended, canceled, revoked, or denied may not use the alternate renewal methods.

Renewing by phone would put a card in the hands of somebody the state has already stopped. The counter is where that gets caught.

Texas Driver Handbook, p.10

Military personnel and their families returning from active duty have 90 days from an honorable discharge to renew without retaking the exams, even if the license expired over two years ago.

A deployment is not neglect. Texas holds the exams off for a window after the person gets home.

Within 90 days of being honorably discharged, military personnel, spouses and dependents returning from active duty must present a Texas driver license and separation papers to obtain a renewal license without taking the knowledge and driving exams when the license has been expired for over two years

On the test

How often must a Texas driver license be renewed?

Every eight years. It is long enough that most drivers forget when theirs runs out. The renewal notice is a courtesy, not a guarantee. Texas Driver Handbook, p.10: “A Texas driver license must be renewed every eight years”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
