Texas Permit Practice Test — DPS Written Test, Free to Start
Free 10-question Texas permit practice test, then 30-question practice tests, each question cited to the Texas Driver Handbook.
The exam
This practice test is 30 questions, and 21 correct is a pass. Everything on it comes out of Texas Driver Handbook. Officially it is the knowledge test; most people call it the written test, or the permit test.
Texas does not publish how many questions its knowledge test asks. This practice test asks 30, and passes at the 70% that follows from Texas’s own rules (the Texas Driver Handbook, printed p.7: “You must score a grade of 70 percent or better to pass any knowledge exam”).
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
Ask a question about Texas road law
Easier than searching the manual: ask in your own words — how far from a fire hydrant you may park, when you must stop for a school bus — and the answer comes from Texas Driver Handbook or Texas’s code, with the page or the section it is in. When neither says, the answer says so rather than guess. Or tick Nationwide and compare every state on one question.

Questions from the Texas test
How long does a new Texas resident have to establish residency and get a Texas license?
90 days. The clock starts the day you move, not the day you get around to it. People who wait a year are driving on a license Texas has stopped honoring. Texas Driver Handbook, p.1: “Residents: • Texas residents who have a valid Texas driver license • New residents who are exchanging a valid out-of-state license have 90 days to establish residency in Texas in order to secure a Texas driver license”
What does a Texas learner license allow?
Practice driving with a licensed driver aboard. A beginner misses things. The whole point of the second person is that someone is watching the road who has done this before. Texas Driver Handbook, p.1: “A learner license, also known as an instruction permit, allows a student driver to legally practice driving when accompanied by a licensed driver”
What must an applicant under 18 show when applying for a first Texas license?
Evidence of school enrollment or a diploma. Texas ties the first license to staying in school. Dropping out costs the card, which is the point of the rule. Texas Driver Handbook, p.2: “Have obtained a high school diploma or its equivalent; or”
Who may be issued a Texas hardship license?
A minor who establishes the necessity to drive. Some families lose the only driver. Texas answers with a license shaped around the reason it was asked for. Texas Driver Handbook, p.2: “A hardship license (previously known as Minor Restricted Driver License or MRDL) may be issued to a minor who establishes the necessity to drive and may have restrictions based on the qualifying hardship”
What does the Graduated Driver License program do for drivers under 18?
It phases in driving privileges a step at a time. Teenagers crash more than anyone else on the road. Handing out the whole license at once is what the phases are built to avoid. Texas Driver Handbook, p.2: “The Graduated Driver License (GDL) program eases teens into the driving experience by phasing in driving privileges and minimizing exposure to high-risk situations”
Who is issued a Texas provisional license?
A person 16 to 18 years of age. Between the learner permit and a full license there is a stage where the driver is alone but still limited. This card is that stage. Texas Driver Handbook, p.3: “A provisional license is a driver license issued to persons 16 to 18 years of age that has the Phase Two GDL driving restrictions applied”
Which license class covers an ordinary passenger car in Texas?
Class C. This is the ordinary car license and the one most Texans hold. The other classes exist for weight the family car never reaches. Texas Driver Handbook, p.4: “A single vehicle or combination of vehicles that are not included in Class A or Class B and”
Who may be issued a Texas identification card?
A person of any age, young or old. An ID card is for people who do not drive, so no age bar makes sense. The under-21 marking does the same job it does on a license. Texas Driver Handbook, p.5: “ID cards can be issued to any person of any age. Anyone under the age of 21 will have “Under 21” printed on the card”
How must an application for a Texas driver license be made?
In person. Fingerprints and a photograph cannot be posted in. The in-person rule is what ties the card to the person holding it. Texas Driver Handbook, p.6: “An application for a driver license must be made in person”
Who must complete an approved driver education course in Texas?
A person younger than 25 years of age. The age bar is higher than most people expect. Texas found new drivers in their early twenties crashing like teenagers. Texas Driver Handbook, p.7: “Individuals younger than 25 years of age are required to successfully complete an approved driver education course”
What score passes a Texas knowledge exam?
70 percent or better. The bar is a share of the paper, not a fixed count of right answers. That is why the same rule covers exams of different lengths. Texas Driver Handbook, p.7: “You must score a grade of 70 percent or better to pass any knowledge exam”
What must be done before the Texas driving exam is given?
All other exams passed and insurance shown. There is no point putting an uninsured car on the road to be tested. Texas checks the paperwork before the drive. Texas Driver Handbook, p.8: “The driving exam is given only after all other exams are passed and evidence of financial responsibility is presented or the vehicle is exempt under the Texas Motor Vehicle Safety Responsibility Act.”
Which four skills is every Texas driving exam graded on?
Control, observation, positioning and signaling. The examiner is not marking a list of maneuvers. These four are what every maneuver is scored against. Texas Driver Handbook, p.8: “All drivers are graded on four basic skills, regardless of the type of driving exam. 1. Control”
To whom must a Texas driver show their license on request?
Any peace officer, sheriff, constable, judge or state trooper. The card at home proves nothing at the roadside. Texas names who may ask so there is no argument about it. Texas Driver Handbook, p.9: “always carry your license with you when driving and upon request, show it to: 1. Any peace officer, sheriff, constable, judge, justice of the peace, or state trooper”
What fine may a first conviction for driving without a license carry?
A fine of up to $200. It is the cheapest of the license offenses and the easiest to repeat. The second one costs more. Texas Driver Handbook, p.9: “A fine of up to $200”
How soon must a Texas driver report a change of address?
Within 30 days. Every notice the state sends goes to the address on file, including the one that says your license is about to lapse. A stale address is how people miss it. Texas Driver Handbook, p.9: “A change of address must be reported to DPS within 30 days”
How often must a Texas driver license be renewed?
Every eight years. It is long enough that most drivers forget when theirs runs out. The renewal notice is a courtesy, not a guarantee. Texas Driver Handbook, p.10: “A Texas driver license must be renewed every eight years”
What happens to a Texas license on conviction for driving while intoxicated?
It is automatically suspended. No hearing decides this one. The conviction itself is what takes the license away. Texas Driver Handbook, p.10: “the following offenses will result in the automatic suspension of your license and driving privilege”
How many separate traffic convictions in 12 months may cost a Texas driver their license?
Four or more. One ticket is a bad day; four in a year is a pattern. The department gets to act on the pattern. Texas Driver Handbook, p.11: “3. Repeated violations of traffic laws, including: a. Four or more traffic convictions occurring separately within any 12-month period or b.”
What does a minor in possession conviction cost a person under 21?
The driving privilege, which is suspended. The offense has nothing to do with a car, and the license goes anyway. That is what Texas means by zero tolerance. Texas Driver Handbook, p.11: “Convictions or failure to comply with the following offenses will result in automatic suspension of the driving privilege of individuals who are less than 21 years of age (See Administrative License Revocation (ALR) section for more suspension information regarding minors.) Alcoholic Beverage Code Offenses 1. Minor in possession”
What does the Administrative License Revocation law provide?
An administrative penalty for driving while intoxicated. The criminal case can take months and may go either way. This runs beside it and reaches the license first. Texas Driver Handbook, p.12: “The Administrative License Revocation (ALR) law provides an administrative penalty for driving while intoxicated”
What does cancellation of a Texas license mean?
It is withdrawn for failing to qualify. Cancellation is not a punishment for driving: it is the card being withdrawn because its holder no longer qualifies to hold it. Texas Driver Handbook, p.12: “DPS is authorized to cancel the driver license or ID card of individuals who do not meet certain qualifications”
What is the penalty for a first offense of driving while license invalid?
A Class C misdemeanor and a fine up to $500. This is the baseline offense for driving on a license the state has already taken. It gets worse from here. Texas Driver Handbook, p.13: “Class C misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $500”
How long is a Texas minor's license suspended for a first non-driving alcohol offense?
For 30 days. The first one is meant to be survivable and still cost something. A month without a license is the something. Texas Driver Handbook, p.13: “The driver license will be suspended (or privilege will be denied if not licensed) for 30 days”
What must a person prove to a court to get a Texas occupational license?
That there is an essential need to drive. Losing a license can cost somebody their job, which helps nobody. The court decides whether the need is real. Texas Driver Handbook, p.14: “prove to a court there is an essential need to drive”
How often must a vehicle registered in Texas be inspected?
Once every year. Brakes and lights fail quietly over a year of driving. The yearly check is what catches them before another driver does. Texas Driver Handbook, p.15: “All motor vehicles registered in Texas must be inspected each year at an official motor vehicle inspection station”
Within what distance must a Texas foot brake stop a car traveling at 20 mph?
25 feet. A brake that works is not the same as a brake that stops you. Texas sets the distance the pedal has to deliver. Texas Driver Handbook, p.15: “Foot Brake - Must stop car within a distance of 25 feet at a speed of 20 mph”
Which vehicle may show a red light from the front in Texas?
An emergency vehicle. Red at the front is how drivers pick an emergency vehicle out of traffic. Anything else wearing it steals that signal. Texas Driver Handbook, p.16: “The following equipment is considered unsafe and is not allowed on your vehicle: 1. A red light showing from the front except on an emergency vehicle”
When must a Texas spotlight be turned off?
For a vehicle approaching from the opposite direction. A spotlight in the face of oncoming traffic blinds the person who most needs to see. Switching it off is the whole rule. Texas Driver Handbook, p.16: “Spotlights must be turned off for a vehicle approaching from the opposite direction”
How long does a Texas owner have to register a newly purchased vehicle?
Within 30 days of purchase. Until the vehicle is in the owner's name, nobody can be traced through it. Thirty days is the window. Texas Driver Handbook, p.16: “must register a newly purchased vehicle within 30 days of purchase”
What must every Texas driver carry?
At least the minimum liability insurance. Insurance is how the person you hit gets paid. Without it the cost lands on them and on you personally. Texas Driver Handbook, p.18: “All owners and/or operators of motor vehicles in Texas must have at least the minimum amount of liability insurance”
Is an insurance card shown on a phone accepted in Texas?
Yes, if it shows what a standard form shows. Nobody carries paper any more and Texas stopped pretending otherwise. The picture on the phone counts. Texas Driver Handbook, p.18: “image displayed on a wireless communication device that includes the information required in a standard insurance form”
What fine does a first conviction for driving uninsured carry in Texas?
A fine of $175 to $350. The fine has a floor as well as a ceiling. A court cannot wave the first one away with nothing. Texas Driver Handbook, p.18: “A fine of $175 to $350”
What does the Texas handbook say about right-of-way in every situation?
It is something given rather than taken. Being right does not stop a crash. The rules decide who pays afterwards, not who walks away. Texas Driver Handbook, p.20: “taken. All drivers should know and understand the laws that determine who has the right-of-way”
Who yields where a two-lane road meets a road with three or more lanes?
The driver on the two-lane road. The bigger road carries more traffic and moves faster. Texas decides the order by the road rather than by who arrives. Texas Driver Handbook, p.20: “lanes, you must yield the right-of-way to vehicles traveling on the divided or three (3) or more lane road”
How far from the nearest rail must a Texas driver stop at a railroad crossing?
Between 15 and 50 feet. Closer than fifteen feet is inside the swing of the train; further than fifty and you cannot see down the track. The band is both at once. Texas Driver Handbook, p.21: “When approaching a railroad grade crossing, stop between 15 and 50 feet from the nearest rail if:”
What must a Texas driver do for an emergency vehicle with its siren sounding?
Pull to the right edge of the road and stop. Everybody clearing to the same side leaves one open path. Pulling left creates a second obstacle instead. Texas Driver Handbook, p.22: “If traffic allows, pull to the right edge of the road and stop”
When must a Texas driver stop for a school bus?
When it shows alternately flashing red lights. Children cross in front of the bus where the driver of a passing car cannot see them. Both directions stop for that reason. Texas Driver Handbook, p.23: “bus from either direction and the bus is displaying alternately flashing red lights, you must stop”
Who has the right-of-way at a Texas intersection with no pedestrian signals?
The pedestrian crossing on foot. With nothing posted, a person on foot has no signal to obey and no protection. The rule puts the duty on the driver. Texas Driver Handbook, p.23: “must give the right-of-way to pedestrians: 1. At an uncontrolled intersection (there are not any traffic signs or signals for the pedestrian to enter the crosswalk)”
Whose direction outranks a traffic signal in Texas?
A law enforcement officer directing traffic. An officer standing in the road can see what the signal cannot. When the two disagree, the person wins. Texas Driver Handbook, p.25: “officer is directing traffic. You must obey a law enforcement officer at all times when they are directing traffic even if he/she is telling you to do something which is ordinarily considered against the law”
What are the four jobs a Texas traffic sign does?
Warn, guide, inform and regulate. Every sign on the road is doing one of these four jobs. Knowing which one tells you what it is asking of you. Texas Driver Handbook, p.25: “Traffic signs can help you to be a better driver because they: 1. Warn of hazards ahead that are difficult to see”
What does a red traffic sign mean in Texas?
Stop, yield, or do what is posted. Red is the color Texas keeps for the things you have no choice about. Every other color is softer than this one. Texas Driver Handbook, p.26: “Red: Stop, yield, or do what is posted on the sign”
Why does Texas teach the shapes of road signs?
The shape can be read from a distance. At a distance the words are unreadable but the outline is not. The shape is the first thing that reaches you. Texas Driver Handbook, p.26: “Knowing the shapes of these signs will help you know what to do when you are approaching from a distance”
What does this sign warn of?
A traffic control signal ahead. A signal hidden behind a rise or a bend gives no time to stop. The sign is the warning that one is coming. Texas Driver Handbook, p.27: “Warns of a traffic control signal ahead”
What does this sign tell a driver about the road ahead?
It makes a sharp turn the way the arrow points. A sharp turn taken at road speed puts a car on the wrong side or off the edge. The sign is asking for the speed to come off first. Texas Driver Handbook, p.27: “Road ahead makes a sharp turn in the direction of the arrow”
What does this sign tell a driver to avoid doing?
Turning, speeding up or stopping suddenly. A road that grips in the dry can let go entirely in the wet. Every sudden movement is what breaks the grip. Texas Driver Handbook, p.27: “Slow down on wet road. Do not suddenly turn, speed up, or stop”
What does this sign tell a driver to watch for?
A large number of people crossing the street. People cross here in numbers whether or not a driver expects it. Slowing is what makes a sudden one survivable. Texas Driver Handbook, p.28: “You are near an area where a large number of pedestrians cross the street. Slow down and watch for pedestrians.”
What does this sign require of every vehicle that reaches it?
A complete stop before proceeding carefully. Rolling through is the commonest version of this offense and the reason the manual says it outright. The wheels have to stop turning. Texas Driver Handbook, p.30: “The stop sign means come to a complete stop, yield to pedestrians or other vehicles, and then proceed carefully”
What does this sign tell a driver?
Not to pass other vehicles. It is posted where the road ahead hides what is coming. Passing here is the crash the sign exists to prevent. Texas Driver Handbook, p.30: “Do not pass other vehicles”
What does this sign tell a driver?
The maximum speed they may travel. It is a limit, not a target, and it assumes everything about the road is normal. In rain it is already too fast. Texas Driver Handbook, p.30: “This sign tells you the maximum speed (in mph) you are permitted to travel”
What does this sign tell a driver is ahead?
A railroad crossing a few hundred feet ahead. It is posted far enough back that a train is still invisible. Slowing there is what makes the stop possible. Texas Driver Handbook, p.32: “This sign means you are within a few hundred feet of a railroad crossing. Slow down and be prepared to stop”
What does this sign tell a driver?
Which way to go and how far it is. It is the sign that answers where rather than what. Reading it early is what stops a last-second lane change. Texas Driver Handbook, p.32: “Travel information: This sign tells you which way to go and how far you must travel to get to cities, airports, and other destinations”
Who may use a Texas high occupancy vehicle lane during its posted hours?
Buses and vehicles used for carpools. The lane is reserved for part of the day and ordinary for the rest. The hours on the sign are the whole rule. Texas Driver Handbook, p.30: “Lane: Buses and vehicles used for carpools may use this lane only between the hours of 6 a.m”
When does a Texas school zone speed limit apply?
When the yellow light on the sign is flashing. The lower limit only applies while children are arriving or leaving. The flashing light is what switches it on. Texas Driver Handbook, p.31: “School Zone: The speed shown is in effect when the yellow light is flashing”
What job do Texas pavement markings do?
They warn, direct and regulate traffic. The lines under the wheels carry as much law as the signs overhead. Most drivers read them without noticing. Texas Driver Handbook, p.33: “Pavement markings help you just like signs and signals. They are used to warn and direct drivers and to regulate traffic”
What is the basic color of Texas work zone traffic control devices?
Orange. The color change is the first warning the layout is temporary. Everything about the road ahead may be different today. Texas Driver Handbook, p.35: “flashing arrow panels, and flag individuals. Orange is the basic color for these devices”
Where are Texas impact cushion barrels usually installed?
In front of a solid obstacle. They are there to be hit instead of the concrete behind them. Seeing a row of them says something solid is close. Texas Driver Handbook, p.35: “Barrels that are engineered to act as an impact cushion reduce the seriousness of crashes. These barrels are usually installed in front of a solid obstacle and in areas of high crash frequency”
When must a Texas driver stop at a crossing with gates and lights?
When the lights begin to flash. The lights come on first and the gate follows. Waiting for the gate is waiting too long. Texas Driver Handbook, p.33: “Stop when the lights begin to flash before the gate lowers across your side of the road”
How far before a turn must a Texas driver signal?
At least 100 feet. A signal flicked on at the corner tells the driver behind nothing they can use. A hundred feet is enough distance to react in. Texas Driver Handbook, p.38: “Signal continuously for at least 100 feet before turning or stopping, and be sure to turn off your signal lights once your turn is complete”
How close to an intersection may a Texas driver not drive on the left side of the road?
Within 100 feet. A car on the wrong side at an intersection meets everything that turns into it. The hundred feet is the approach as well as the crossing. Texas Driver Handbook, p.38: “Never drive on the left side of the road when: 1. Pavement markings or signs prohibit driving on the left (a “No Passing Zone” or solid lane lines) 2. There are two or more traffic lanes in each direction 3. Within 100 feet of or crossing an intersection or railroad crossing”
How much room must a Texas driver leave an approaching car when finishing a pass?
At least 200 feet. Two cars closing head-on cover ground faster than either of them is driving. Two hundred feet is the cushion Texas asks for. Texas Driver Handbook, p.39: “Be sure you have enough time and space to overtake the car ahead and return to the right lane before an approaching car comes within 200 feet of you”
Why does a Texas driver stop a hand signal before starting the turn?
Both hands are needed on the wheel. The hand comes back in before the wheel starts to move. Turning one-handed is how a driver loses the line. Texas Driver Handbook, p.40: “If using a hand signal, hold the signal until you are close enough to the intersection for others to know your intention. Do not hold the signal while making the turn; you need both hands on the wheel”
What must a Texas driver do when leaving their vehicle?
Turn off the motor, set the brake, take the key. A car left running can be driven away by anybody, or roll on its own. All three steps are one habit. Texas Driver Handbook, p.42: “vehicle, turn the motor off, set the parking brake and remove the key”
What does Texas prohibit beside a vehicle already parked at the curb?
Stopping on the road side of that vehicle. Double parking pushes everybody else into the next lane to get round. It is the one on this list drivers do on purpose. Texas Driver Handbook, p.42: “In the following situations, you should not park, stop, or allow a vehicle to stand idling: 1. On the road side of any vehicle stopped or parked at the edge or curb of a street”
How far from a Texas fire hydrant must a driver park?
At least 15 feet away. A fire crew needs to get a hose to the hydrant in seconds. A car on it costs exactly the time nobody has. Texas Driver Handbook, p.42: “Whether occupied or not, do not park or allow a vehicle to stand idling: 1. In front of a public or private driveway 2. Within 15 feet of a fire hydrant”
Where should a Texas driver park on a highway outside a town?
Off the road, whenever that is possible. A car on the pavement out of town is a stationary object in a lane running at highway speed. Getting off the road is the first answer. Texas Driver Handbook, p.42: “Never park or leave a vehicle to stand idling on the paved part of any highway outside of a business or residential district when you can park off the road”
What fine does a first offense of parking in a Texas disabled space carry?
A fine of $500 to $750. The fine is high because the space is not a convenience for the person it belongs to. It is the only way they can get out of the car. Texas Driver Handbook, p.42: “space reserved for individuals with disabilities is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of $500 to $750 for the first offense”
How far from the curb may a Texas vehicle be parked on a two-way road?
Within 18 inches of the curb. Parked further out, the car sticks into the lane traffic uses. Eighteen inches is where it stops being an obstacle. Texas Driver Handbook, p.44: “Do not park more than 18 inches from the curb or edge of the road”
What is the minimum following time at 30 mph or less in Texas?
2 seconds. Distance in feet changes with speed but time does not. Counting seconds works at any speed. Texas Driver Handbook, p.45: “For speeds 30 mph or less, the minimum time between your car and the one in front of you is 2 seconds with good road conditions”
About how far does a Texas car take to stop from 20 mph?
About 63 feet. Even at a crawl the car keeps going for four car lengths. That is the shortest number on the whole table. Texas Driver Handbook, p.45: “63 Feet to Stop”
What is the Texas maximum speed limit in an urban district?
30 mph. Built-up streets have cars pulling out and people stepping off curbs. Thirty is what makes a stop possible. Texas Driver Handbook, p.46: “Urban District 30”
Which vehicles does the Texas slow down or move over law cover?
Emergency, tow, utility and highway vehicles. The rule covers tow trucks and road crews as well as police. Anyone working beside a live lane is in the same danger. Texas Driver Handbook, p.46: “If an emergency medical vehicle, law enforcement vehicle, fire truck, tow truck, utility service vehicle, Texas Department of”
When must a Texas driver switch on the headlights?
From 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise. The half hour either side of the sun is when the light is worst and drivers least expect it. The rule is a clock, not a judgment. Texas Driver Handbook, p.47: “You must use your headlights beginning 30 minutes after sunset and ending 30 minutes before sunrise, or anytime when individuals or vehicles cannot be seen clearly for at least 1,000 feet”
Who yields when a Texas driver enters a highway?
The driver entering the highway. The traffic already up to speed has nowhere to go. Fitting in is the job of the car arriving. Texas Driver Handbook, p.47: “You must yield the right-of-way to vehicles already on the highway”
What brings on highway hypnosis in Texas?
Reduced activity and steady engine and tire sounds. Nothing about it feels like falling asleep, which is why it catches people. The road simply stops registering. Texas Driver Handbook, p.48: “A condition of drowsiness or unawareness can be brought on by reduced activity and steady sounds of wind, engine, and tire hum”
What should a Texas driver do if the car cannot be moved off the road?
Get everyone out of the car and off the road. A stopped car in a live lane will be hit eventually. The people in it are the part that cannot be replaced. Texas Driver Handbook, p.48: “If you can’t get the car off the road, get everyone out of the car and off the road”
What happens when a Texas car goes into a skid?
The tires lose their grip on the road. Nothing about the steering or the brakes works while that is true. Getting the grip back is the only move. Texas Driver Handbook, p.48: “An automobile skids when its tires lose their grip on the road surface”
What does Texas say about a safe speed on snow or ice?
There is no such thing as a safe speed range. Every block can be different depending on sun and shade. The only honest answer is to find out slowly. Texas Driver Handbook, p.49: “There is no such thing as a “safe” speed range at which you may drive on snow or ice”
Which way does traffic flow in a Texas modern roundabout?
