Learner license — Texas Permit Test
Learner license on the Texas permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
A learner license lets a student driver practice legally, but only with a licensed driver beside them.
A beginner misses things. The whole point of the second person is that someone is watching the road who has done this before.
A learner license, also known as an instruction permit, allows a student driver to legally practice driving when accompanied by a licensed driver
The licensed driver supervising a learner must be at least 21 years old and have at least one year of driving experience.
A supervisor who has only just passed the test has nothing to teach. Texas sets a floor on both the age and the years behind the wheel.
The licensed driver must be at least 21 years of age with at least one year of driving experience, must occupy the seat beside the driver, and cannot be intoxicated, asleep, or engaging in any activity that prevents observation and response to the actions of the driver
The licensed driver supervising a learner must sit in the seat beside the driver.
From the back seat nobody can reach the wheel or see the mirrors. Texas puts the supervisor where they can actually take over.
must occupy the seat beside the driver, and cannot be intoxicated, asleep, or engaging in any activity that prevents observation and response to the actions of the driver
The licensed driver supervising a learner may not be intoxicated, asleep, or doing anything that stops them watching the learner.
Someone dozing in the passenger seat is not supervision. The law names the failures it has seen so nobody can argue they were still there.
cannot be intoxicated, asleep, or engaging in any activity that prevents observation and response to the actions of the driver
An applicant for a learner license must be at least 15 years old and no more than 18.
Fifteen is the floor and eighteen is where the learner license stops being the route in. Below fifteen there is no learner license to apply for.
person applying for a learner license must: 1. Be at least 15 but no more than 18 years of age
A learner license expires on the holder's 18th birthday.
The card is tied to the age, not to a fixed run of months. Somebody who gets one at 17 has less than a year of it.
A learner license will indicate “Learner License” on the front of the card and expire on the minor’s 18th birthday
On the test
What does a Texas learner license allow?
Practice driving with a licensed driver aboard. A beginner misses things. The whole point of the second person is that someone is watching the road who has done this before. Texas Driver Handbook, p.1: “A learner license, also known as an instruction permit, allows a student driver to legally practice driving when accompanied by a licensed driver”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
