Who may drive — Texas Permit Test
Who may drive on the Texas permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
A new Texas resident who is trading in a valid out-of-state license has 90 days to establish residency and get a Texas license.
The clock starts the day you move, not the day you get around to it. People who wait a year are driving on a license Texas has stopped honoring.
Residents: • Texas residents who have a valid Texas driver license • New residents who are exchanging a valid out-of-state license have 90 days to establish residency in Texas in order to secure a Texas driver license
A nonresident who is at least 16 years old and holds a valid license from their home state or a Canadian province may drive in Texas.
Visiting drivers are not asked to get a second license. The home-state license carries them, and 16 is the age Texas honors it from.
Nonresidents at least 16 years of age who meet these criteria may drive a vehicle permitted to be operated with a Class C or Class M driver license in Texas
A nonresident who is at least 18 years old may drive any vehicle in Texas if their home state licenses them for it and grants Texas drivers the same courtesy.
This is a trade between states, not a favor. Texas honors the other license only where the other place honors a Texas one back.
Nonresidents who are at least 18 years of age may drive any vehicle in Texas if they are legally licensed to drive such a vehicle in their home state or country, and the home state or country grants like recognition (reciprocity) to citizens of Texas
A person driving a road machine, farm tractor, or implement of husbandry moved on a highway does not need a Texas license unless it is a commercial motor vehicle.
A tractor crossing from one field to the next is farm work, not road travel. The exception stops the moment the machine is a commercial truck.
person, while driving or operating any road machine, farm tractor, or implement of husbandry temporarily operated or moved on a highway is exempt from having a Texas license, unless the vehicle is a commercial motor vehicle
On the test
How long does a new Texas resident have to establish residency and get a Texas license?
90 days. The clock starts the day you move, not the day you get around to it. People who wait a year are driving on a license Texas has stopped honoring. Texas Driver Handbook, p.1: “Residents: • Texas residents who have a valid Texas driver license • New residents who are exchanging a valid out-of-state license have 90 days to establish residency in Texas in order to secure a Texas driver license”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
