Instruments and mirrors — Vermont Permit Test

Instruments and mirrors on the Vermont permit test — 3 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

The speedometer and odometer must be working properly and must be where the driver can see them. Federal law says the numbers on an odometer must not be altered.

The speedometer is the only way to know your speed, and the odometer is what a buyer is being told about the car.

The speedometer and odometer in your vehicle must be working properly and must be where the driver can see them.

You must have a rearview mirror and a horn, and the law says nothing may hang from the rearview mirror or the sun visors.

Anything swinging from the mirror sits exactly where a pedestrian stepping off a curb would appear.

The law states there shall not be anything hanging from the rearview mirror or sun visors.

A driver has to be able to see clearly to the front and sides, so objects carried in the vehicle, passengers and pets must not be in the driver's way.

A stack of boxes on the back seat blocks exactly the view you need for a lane change.

Objects carried in the vehicle, passengers, or pets should not be in the driver's way while driving.

On the test

Where must the speedometer and odometer be?

Working, and where the driver can see them. The speedometer is the only way to know your speed, and the odometer is what a buyer is being told about the car. 2025 Vermont Driver's Manual, p.61: “The speedometer and odometer in your vehicle must be working properly and must be where the driver can see them.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
