Following distance conditions — Wyoming Permit Test

Following distance conditions on the Wyoming permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

Double your following distance when roads are wet; for a car, that is 4 seconds.

Wet pavement makes tires slip, so it takes longer to stop.

wet, when you are carrying a heavier than normal load, or at night (cars, four seconds).

Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.75

Besides wet roads, double your following distance when carrying a heavier than normal load or driving at night.

A heavy load takes longer to stop, and at night you see trouble later, so both need a bigger gap.

Triple your following distance when roads are covered with snow and slush; for a car, that is 6 seconds.

Snow and slush cut your tires' grip far more than rain does, so stopping takes much longer.

Quadruple your following distance when ice covers the road; for a car, that is 8 seconds.

On ice a car can slide a very long way before it stops, so it needs the biggest gap of all.

If you cannot see clearly in reduced light, increase your following distance by at least 3 or 4 seconds.

When you see hazards later, you need extra time to react to them.

If you cannot see clearly, it makes sense to increase your following distance at least three or four seconds.

On the test

On wet roads, how many seconds of following distance should a car keep?

4 seconds. Wet pavement makes tires slip, so it takes longer to stop. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.75: “wet, when you are carrying a heavier than normal load, or at night (cars, four seconds).”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
