Wyoming Permit Practice Test — Written Test, Free to Start
Free 10-question Wyoming permit practice test, then 40-question practice tests, each question cited to the Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual.
The exam
This practice test is 40 questions, and 32 correct is a pass. Everything on it comes out of Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual. Officially it is the knowledge test; most people call it the written test, or the permit test.
Wyoming does not publish how many questions its knowledge test asks. This practice test asks 40, and passes at the 80% set by Wyoming’s own rules (WYDOT Rules Chapter 1, Section 11).
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
Ask a question about Wyoming road law
Easier than searching the manual: ask in your own words — how far from a fire hydrant you may park, when you must stop for a school bus — and the answer comes from Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual or Wyoming’s code, with the page or the section it is in. When neither says, the answer says so rather than guess. Or tick Nationwide and compare every state on one question.

Questions from the Wyoming test
Which of these lets you drive legally in Wyoming?
A valid instruction permit. A license or permit is the state's proof that you have shown you can handle a car before you take one on the road. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.5: “To drive legally in Wyoming, you must have a valid driver license, instruction permit, intermediate license or restricted license.”
A full-time University of Wyoming student holds a valid Colorado license. Does the student need a Wyoming license?
No, the Colorado license is enough. A student is in Wyoming for school, and their home state has already tested and licensed them. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.5: “Full-time students attending the University of Wyoming or a Wyoming community college who have a valid license from another state;”
Your driving privileges are suspended in another state. Can Wyoming issue you a license?
No, not while that suspension stands. A suspension in another state follows you here, so moving to Wyoming does not clear it. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.5: “Persons whose driving privileges are suspended, canceled, denied or revoked in this or any other state”
Which vehicle does a Class C license not cover?
A motorcycle. A motorcycle balances and brakes so differently from a car that it needs its own test. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.6: “The Class C license authorizes operation of a single vehicle or combination of vehicles, except motorcycles, with a GVWR less than 26,001 pounds,”
What does a restriction code on a Wyoming license mean?
You may drive only under set conditions. The code lets an officer see at a glance the conditions under which you were judged safe to drive. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.6: “Restriction codes mean that license holders may only operate a vehicle in certain circumstances or if special provisions are met.”
Which three tests must you pass to get a Wyoming driver license?
Written, vision and driving skills. Each test checks something different: what you know, what you can see, and what you can actually do behind the wheel. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.7: “To obtain a Wyoming driver license, a person must be of sufficient age, provide legal proof of identification and Wyoming residency, and then pass a written knowledge test, a vision screening and a driving skills test.”
At what age may you get a Wyoming instruction permit?
At 15. A permit gives a new driver a year or more of supervised practice before they ever drive alone. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.7: “An instruction permit may be obtained at 15.”
Which document proves identity for a first-time Wyoming applicant?
A valid U.S. passport. A license is used everywhere as proof of who you are, so the state starts from a document that is hard to fake. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.8: “First-time applicants for a driver license or identification card must provide a state-certified birth certificate, a valid U.S. passport or immigration documents.”
How many proof-of-residency documents must a Wyoming applicant provide?
2 documents. Two separate papers make it much harder to claim a home in Wyoming that you do not have. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.8: “Any two of the following are acceptable documents that must be provided as proof that you are a Wyoming resident, and they must show a residential address, not a P.O. Box:”
What visual acuity must you have with both eyes to meet Wyoming's vision standard?
20/40. A driver who cannot read a sign until it is close has no time left to react to it. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.8: “A person must have 20/40 acuity with both eyes, either with or without glasses, and a combined horizontal field vision of at least 120 degrees to meet Wyoming vision standards for operating a motor vehicle.”
What must a first-time applicant who has never been licensed anywhere pass?
A skills test of safe driving maneuvers. Someone who has never held a license has never shown anyone they can actually control a car. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.9: “First-time applicants, who have never been licensed in this or any other state, are required to pass a skills test consisting of safe driving maneuvers.”
Besides a driver education certificate, what can waive the skills test for a first Wyoming license?
A valid out-of-state license. A driver already licensed elsewhere has passed a road test there, so a second one adds little. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.10: “The skills test may be waived if a valid out-of-state license or a driver's education certificate from an approved driver's education course is presented.”
What must you pass to get a Wyoming instruction permit?
A written knowledge test and vision screening. You must know the rules and see the road before you practice on it, even with a coach beside you. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.10: “Applicants should be prepared to pass a written knowledge test and vision screening.”
A Wyoming licensee over 21 may renew within how many days before expiration?
120 days. An early window lets you renew before a trip or a busy month leaves you driving on an expired license. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.10: “Licensees over 21 may renew within the 120-day period preceding expiration.”
At 17, must you have held an intermediate license to get full driving privileges?
No, it can be issued without one. By 17 the law treats a driver who passes every test as ready to drive with no teen limits. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.11: “At 17, an applicant may be issued a Wyoming driver’s license with full driving privileges without having been issued an intermediate license or any other type of license or permit.”
At 16 and a half, how old must your intermediate license be to get full privileges?
At least 6 months. Six clean months on the limited license show the teen can handle driving before the limits come off. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.13: “At 16 and one-half years of age, applicants may also be issued full driving privileges if they have a current intermediate license that is at least six months old, their current, restricted driving privileges have not been suspended, and if they have completed a driver education course approved by the Wyoming Department of Education.”
Which applicants may get a Wyoming restricted license for extreme inconvenience?
Ages 14 and 15. Ranch families can live far from town, and the license lets a young teen get to school or work. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.13: “A restricted license may be issued to applicants, 14-15, when an extreme inconvenience exists in their household.”
Who may get a Wyoming restricted instruction permit?
A teen approved for a restricted license. It gives an approved teen a short stretch of supervised practice before they drive on the restricted license. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.13: “A restricted instruction permit is available for applicants, ages 14-15 years, who have been approved for a restricted license but do not currently hold an instruction permit.”
How many hours of behind-the-wheel driving must a permit holder complete for an intermediate license?
50 hours. Hours of practice with an adult are what turn a nervous beginner into a driver who reacts without thinking. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.14: “50 hours of behind-the-wheel driving, including 10 hours of nighttime driving, as certified by a parent or legal guardian.”
With no adult aboard, how many non-family passengers under 18 may an intermediate holder carry?
No more than 1. Each extra teen in the car raises a new driver's crash risk, because friends distract. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.14: “May not transport more than one passenger under the age of 18 who is not an immediate family member unless also accompanied by a licensed driver 18 years of age or older”
Before licensing a driver with a disability, what may WYDOT require?
A statement completed by a physician. The state wants disabled drivers on the road, and a doctor's statement shows it is safe for them to be there. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.15: “It may be necessary to have a medical and/or vision statement completed by a physician before a license is issued.”
How long must an impairment last for a permanent disabled placard?
At least 12 months. Permanent placards are for long-term needs; short injuries get a temporary one that runs out. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.18: “The impairment must last a minimum of 12 months.”
What is a medical alert designation on a Wyoming license for?
Telling responders about your condition. After a crash you may be unconscious, and the card can speak for you when you cannot. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.18: “Applications for a Wyoming driver's license or identification card ask whether or not you wish to specify a medical condition to first responder or law enforcement officer in the event you are unable to communicate it yourself.”
What does WYDOT's driving record for each driver contain?
Convictions and resulting adverse actions. Your record follows you, so every ticket counts toward later suspensions and what you pay to insure a car. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.17: “It contains a record of all convictions, motor vehicle convictions, and adverse actions as a result of these convictions.”
After a DWUI arrest, what chemical test result brings an Administrative Per Se suspension?
0.08 percent or greater. At that level a driver is impaired whether or not they feel it, so the license is taken before the case reaches court. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.19: “you have been arrested for DWUI and the results of your chemical test show an alcohol concentration of 0.08 percent or greater.”
Over how many years does Wyoming look back to decide whether a DWUI is a first or a repeat offense?
10 years. A long look-back window means a repeat drinking driver cannot wait out a short gap and be treated as a first-timer again. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.20: “1st offense (within previous 10 years) Length of suspension: 90 days.”
On a first DWUI, what BAC at arrest brings an ignition interlock requirement?
.15% or greater. A very high BAC on a first arrest marks a heavy drinker, and the device stops the car from starting if they drink again. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.20: “If your BAC (blood alcohol content) at the time of arrest was .15% or greater, you will be required to hold an ignition interlock restricted driver license for a period of 6 months before you are eligible for any other type of driver license.”
A driver under 21 is suspended for DWUI at what alcohol concentration?
0.02 percent or more. Young drivers are still learning, and even a small amount of alcohol is enough to make their mistakes far more likely. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.22: “If you are younger than 21 years of age and are in actual physical control of a vehicle with an alcohol concentration of two one-hundredths of one percent (0.02 percent) or more, you will be suspended for DWUI.”
What conviction brings a Reckless Driving Suspension?
Wanton disregard for safety. Driving as if other people do not matter is how crashes that hurt bystanders happen. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.22: “This suspension results upon receipt of a conviction of driving a vehicle with willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property.”
How long is the suspension for furnishing alcohol to a person under 21 in a vehicle?
1 year. Handing drinks to teens in a car puts alcohol in the hands of the least experienced drivers on the road. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.23: “This results from a conviction for the intent of furnishing any alcoholic liquid or malt beverage to any person under the age of 21 while operating or occupying a motor vehicle. Length of suspension: One year.”
Under the Non-Resident Violator Compact, which state suspends you for an unanswered out-of-state ticket?
The state that licensed you. Without it, a driver could ignore an out-of-state ticket just by going home. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.24: “The state where the violator is licensed takes suspension action, not the state where the offense occurred.”
How many moving violations within 12 months does Wyoming allow before a suspension notice?
Up to 3. Many tickets in a short time show a habit of risky driving that has to be stopped before it ends in a crash. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.24: “You are allowed up to three moving violations within a 12-month period.”
How long does a suspension for having no liability insurance last?
Until an SR-22 is filed. An uninsured driver who causes a crash can leave the victim paying for it, so they stay off the road until insured. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.25: “Length of suspension: Until an SR-22 insurance form has been filed with the department.”
Which of these is unlawful?
Lending your license to a friend. A borrowed license lets someone hide who they are, such as an underage person buying alcohol or a suspended driver. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.25: “It is unlawful to lend your license or ID card to someone else to use as their identification, to knowingly make a false statement, give fictitious information, use a false name, or conceal a fact on an application for a license or ID card.”
What does a first moving violation bring for a driver holding a class RC restricted license?
A 90-day suspension. A restricted license is a privilege given early, so breaking the rules on it costs it quickly. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.26: “A 90-day suspension is imposed for a first offense and a one-year suspension for a second or subsequent offense.”
How long is the suspension for violating intermediate license restrictions?
30 days. The intermediate rules keep new drivers out of the riskiest situations, so breaking them costs driving time. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.26: “This suspension is the result of a violation of the restrictions for an intermediate license. A 30-day suspension is imposed for this offense.”
Driving under suspension brings what added suspension for a driver under 21?
A 30-day suspension. Driving while barred shows the driver ignores the law, and a young driver is the one most likely to crash. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.26: “This results in a 30-day suspension of your driving privileges if you are under 21 years of age.”
What triggers an Uninsured Accident Suspension?
Unverifiable insurance at a crash. If no insurance can be shown, the people hurt in the crash may never be paid for their damage. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.26: “This is a result of the driver's insurance not being verifiable at the time of the crash.”
What license can allow limited driving during a suspension?
A probationary driver license. It lets a driver keep getting to work or school while still serving most of the penalty. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.27: “If so, you may request a Record Review to see if you are eligible to be issued a probationary driver license which will allow you limited driving privileges during the suspension period.”
What must you do to be re-licensed after a revocation ends?
Go through a driver investigation. A canceled license is not simply handed back; the state checks the driver is safe before trusting them again. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.27: “A revocation cancels your driver license, and you must go through a driver investigation to be re-licensed once the revocation is over.”
What is an SR-22?
A certificate your insurer files. It lets the state confirm a risky driver really has insurance instead of taking their word for it. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.27: “An SR-22 is an insurance certificate that your insurance company files with the department.”
If a suspension is already on your record, when does a new one start?
At the end of the existing one. Stacking a new suspension after an old one means the penalties add up instead of overlapping. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.28: “The start of a suspension/revocation is 30 days from the date the order is mailed to you by the department or given to you by law enforcement, or at the end of any suspensions already on your record.”
Under Wyoming law, who in a vehicle must wear a safety belt?
All occupants, including the driver. In a crash an unbelted rider is thrown around the car or out of it, and can also slam into the people who are belted. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.29: “Under Wyoming law, a safety belt (seat belt) must be worn by all occupants of the vehicle, including the driver.”
Wyoming's child restraint law covers a child who has not reached which birthday?
Their 9th birthday. Adult belts do not fit small bodies, and a belt that rides on the neck or belly can hurt a child in a crash. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.30: “Child who has not reached his/her ninth birthday.”
A belt-positioning booster provides protection for a child over what weight?
40 pounds. A booster lifts the child so the adult belt crosses the strong bones instead of the neck and belly. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.31: “Look at weight and height limits of the belt-positioning booster which provides protection for child over 40 pounds.”
Which of these persons is not required to wear a safety belt?
A postal carrier on their route. A carrier stops and starts at every mailbox, so the law makes an exception for that work only. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.32: “Who is a U.S. postal service worker performing duties as a postal carrier;”
What concept does the Driver License Compact provide?
One license, one record. One record means a driver cannot hide tickets or suspensions by holding licenses in two states. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.33: “The compact provides guidelines for greater cooperation among states in driver license issues, and provides a one license, one record concept.”
What does alcohol do to the activity of the brain and spinal cord?
Slows it down. Driving needs fast thinking and quick reactions, which is exactly what alcohol slows down. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.33: “Alcohol is a drug that slows the activity of the brain and spinal cord.”
Which of these is one of the three factors that influence a person's BAC?
The person's body weight. Knowing what raises BAC helps a driver see that two people can drink the same and not be equally impaired. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.33: “The amount or concentration of alcohol in the blood is known as Blood Alcohol Concentration or BAC. Three factors influence a person’s BAC:”
What happens to an impaired driver's ability to see people and vehicles to the side?
It is almost completely lost. Many crashes come from the side at intersections, exactly where a drinking driver cannot see. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.35: “The ability to detect persons and vehicles to the side is almost completely lost.”
Under the Implied Consent law, when are you deemed to have agreed to a BAC test?
Whenever you drive on a public road. Agreeing ahead of time stops a drinking driver from avoiding the test that would prove it. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.37: “Under the Implied Consent law, drivers are deemed to have given their consent to such tests whenever driving on a public street or highway.”
What do stay-awake pills often do to drivers?
Give a false feeling of alertness. A driver who feels alert but is really exhausted takes risks they cannot handle. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.37: “give drivers a false feeling of alertness and often increase self-confidence, which may lead to excessive risk-taking.”
Police lights come on behind you as you cross a bridge. Where should you stop?
Past the bridge, safely to the right. A stop in a lane or on a bridge puts you and the officer in the path of passing traffic. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.39: “remain calm, slow down, and pull over to the right of the roadway in a safe location.”
Unless another limit is posted, what is the speed limit on a Wyoming interstate highway?
80 or 75 mph. Interstates are built for high speed, with no cross traffic and wide lanes, so they carry the highest limits. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.41: “Interstate Highways. ............................ 80 mph, 75 mph”
About how much of each tire's rubber touches the road?
A patch about the size of a hand. Four small patches of rubber are all that hold the car on the road, so a bad surface takes grip away fast. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.41: “The only contact your car has with the road is through its tires, and each only has an area of rubber about the size of a person's hand on the surface of the road.”
What happens to your crash risk when you drive faster than the flow of traffic?
It rises, since you pass many vehicles. Every pass is a moment beside or in front of another car, so making lots of them stacks up the risk. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.41: “If you are going faster than traffic, you will have to pass other vehicles. The chances of a crash increase if you pass many vehicles.”
About how far ahead do your headlights let you see clearly at night?
250 feet. You cannot avoid what you cannot see, so your speed has to fit how far your lights reach. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.42: “Your lights will only let you see clearly about 250 feet.”
What do Wyoming's right-of-way laws do?
Say who must yield the right of way. Since nobody is promised the road, you still have to watch for drivers who fail to yield and avoid the crash. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.42: “Laws do not give anyone the right of way. They only indicate who must yield the right of way.”
At an intersection with no signs or signals, to whom must you yield?
Any driver coming from your right. With no sign to settle it, one simple rule for everyone stops two drivers from both going at once. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.42: “Where no signs or signals are in place, you must watch for any driver coming from your right and yield the right of way regardless of who first reaches and enters”
A YIELD sign faces your lane at an intersection. To whom must you yield?
Cross traffic close enough to be dangerous. Cross traffic at a YIELD sign has no sign of its own and expects to keep going, so you must fit in around it. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.43: “yield sign is in your lane, yield the right of way”
Where can ice stay on the road even after the sun comes out?
On bridges and in shaded areas. A bridge has cold air above and below it and shade gets no sun, so ice stays there after the rest of the road is clear. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.44: “Watch for ice on bridges, overpasses and shaded areas, where it can remain, even after the sun comes out.”
On ice in a car with conventional brakes, how often should you pump the brakes?
About once every second. Jamming on ordinary brakes locks the wheels and starts a skid, while ABS already pumps far faster than you can. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.46: “Pumping those brakes once every second is a good rule of thumb. But don't pump ABS brakes.”
At a four-way stop, who should go first?
The driver who stopped first. Taking turns in the order cars arrived keeps two drivers from pulling into the middle at once. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.47: “At a four-way stop intersection, common courtesy requires that the driver who stops first should be permitted to go first.”
Which way does traffic travel in a roundabout?
Counterclockwise. Everyone going the same way around means no head-on or right-angle crashes inside the circle. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.48: “Traffic moves at slow speeds in a counterclockwise direction, and is constantly moving except when yielding to traffic in the roundabout and pedestrians in the crosswalks.”
An ambulance with its siren on comes up behind you. What should you do?
Pull close to the right edge and stop. Getting out of the way to the right leaves a clear lane for a vehicle that is racing to save a life. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.48: “When you hear the siren or see the flashing lights of a fire truck, police car or ambulance approaching you from behind:”
On a highway with 2 lanes in your direction, you come up on a parked police car with lights flashing. What must you do?
Move to the lane farthest from it. People work on foot beside those vehicles, and an extra lane of space keeps a passing car from hitting them. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.49: “Except when otherwise directed by a police officer, when you are driving on a highway with two or more lanes, upon approaching an authorized emergency vehicle or municipal, public utility, highway construction or maintenance vehicle parked with lights flashing or visual signals, you must merge your vehicle into the lane farthest from the emergency vehicle.”
When drivers and pedestrians share the road, who is responsible for traffic safety?
Both of them. Neither side can count on the other to prevent every crash, so both have to look out. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.49: “The driver and the pedestrian are both responsible for traffic safety.”
How long does it take to identify a danger, predict and decide what to do?
At least 1 second. Your car keeps moving at full speed while you think, so that second is road you cover before braking even starts. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.49: “PREDICT what could happen, and DECIDE what to do. This takes at least one second.”
There is a crosswalk at a stop sign. Where must you stop?
Before the crosswalk. Stopping past the line puts your car where people on foot are crossing. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.50: “Before the crosswalk at all stop signs, red traffic lights and flashing red lights;”
You stopped for a school bus with its flashing red lights on. When may you go?
When it moves or its lights go off. Children cross the road to and from the bus, often in front of it where a driver cannot see them. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.50: “The driver shall not proceed until the school bus resumes motion or the flashing red lights are no longer activated.”
Besides your mirrors, what must you check before changing lanes?
Over your shoulder for blind spots. Mirrors leave gaps beside the car where a whole vehicle can hide, and only a head turn shows them. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.51: “Check over your left or right shoulder. Make sure no one is in your blind spots;”
At least how far from an intersection must you signal a turn?
100 feet. Drivers behind need time to see your signal and slow down before you turn in front of them. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.51: “At least 100 feet from an intersection.”
When should you move into the proper lane for a turn?
Well before the turn. Cutting across lanes at the last moment surprises the drivers beside you and causes side crashes. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.52: “in the proper lane well before the turn”
What should you do before you back up?
Walk behind the car to check. A small child, a pet or a bike can sit below what you can see from the driver's seat. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.54: “Check behind your vehicle by walking behind it before you back up.”
You want to pass on a two-lane road, but there is a hill just ahead. What should you do?
Wait until you are past the hill. Each of those hides oncoming traffic or adds a hazard, and you may have no room to get back. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.54: “curves, hills, intersections or railroad crossings just ahead, do not pass; WAIT.”
After passing a car, when may you move back into the right lane?
When you see its front in your mirror. Pulling back in too soon cuts off the driver you passed and can clip their front bumper. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.54: “MOVE BACK into the right lane when you see the front of the vehicle in your rear view mirror.”
When may you pass another vehicle on the right?
When it is turning left. Drivers do not look for cars passing on their right, so it is allowed only when the other car is moving out of the way. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.55: “When the vehicle you are overtaking is making a left turn (It is not legal to leave the pavement to pass on the right.); or”
When space allows, how much room should you leave when passing a bicyclist?
At least 3 feet. A rider can wobble or swerve around a rock, and the wind from a close car can push them over. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.56: “Drivers have a responsibility to avoid crashes whenever possible.”
Which is a clue that a parked car may pull out in front of you?
Its front wheels are turned out. A parked car can pull out into your lane with no warning, and these signs give you a moment to get ready. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.57: “When driving past parked cars, watch for cars pulling out in front of you.”
After passing a truck, when may you pull back into its lane?
When both headlights show in your mirror. A truck needs a long space to stop, and cutting in too soon then slowing leaves its driver no room. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.57: “Because it takes longer to pass a large vehicle, you should maintain a consistent speed when passing and be sure you can see both headlights and the entire cab of the truck in your rearview mirror before pulling back into your lane.”
Where does a heavy truck have a large blind spot that cars do not?
Directly behind it. The truck driver cannot see you there, and you cannot see the traffic ahead to know when it will stop. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.58: “Unlike cars, heavy vehicles have large blind spots directly behind them. Avoid tailgating in this No-Zone area.”
May you park on the street side of a car already parked at the curb?
No, it is not legal. A car double-parked in the street blocks a lane and forces traffic to swerve around it. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.58: “On the roadway side of any stopped or parked vehicle;”
You park facing uphill next to a curb. Which way do you turn the front wheels?
Away from the curb. If the car rolls back, the rear of the front tire catches the curb and stops it. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.59: “If you park facing uphill where there is a curb, you should set the parking brake and turn the wheels away from the curb.”
When you make an emergency stop, how should you park if you can?
With all 4 wheels off the pavement. A car partly in the lane can be hit by drivers who do not notice it is stopped. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.59: “When you have to make an emergency stop, park with all four wheels off the pavement, if possible.”
You are pulling out of a parking space. To whom must you yield?
Oncoming vehicles and motorcycles. Cars already on the street have the right of way, and a car darting out gives them no time to stop. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.60: “YIELD the right of way to oncoming vehicles and motorcycles; and”
What is an acceleration lane for?
Matching your speed to traffic. Entering much slower than traffic forces cars behind to brake hard or swerve around you. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.60: “Its purpose is to let you match your speed to that of Interstate traffic.”
Which lane should you drive in on the Interstate when you are not passing?
The right lane. Keeping the left lane for passing lets faster traffic get by without weaving around you. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.61: “AVOID unnecessary lane changing. Stay in the right lane unless overtaking and passing another vehicle.”
How far ahead of your exit should you move into the proper lane?
A mile or more before it. Moving over early avoids cutting across lanes at the last second, when drivers beside you are not ready. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.62: “Signal and move into the proper lane a mile or more before the exit.”
Your car breaks down on the Interstate. Where should you stop?
Far onto the right shoulder. Cars at highway speed pass inches from the lane edge, so every foot off the road lowers the chance of being hit. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.62: “In the event of a breakdown or other emergency, drive the vehicle as far onto the right shoulder as possible.”
An overhead lane sign shows an arrow with the word ONLY. What does it require?
You may only go where the arrow points. Lanes marked ONLY feed traffic one way, so a driver who goes straight from a turn lane cuts across cars that are turning. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.63: “When the word “ONLY” is used, you must go in the direction the arrow points; there is no other option.”
On a two-lane road with one lane in each direction, what are you required to do?
Drive on the right and yield the left half. The left half belongs to cars coming toward you; drifting into it is how head-on crashes start. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.63: “On a two-lane road (one lane going in each direction) you are required to drive on the right side and to yield the left half of the roadway to oncoming traffic.”
What do white lines on the road separate?
Traffic going the same direction. A white line tells you the car on its other side is moving with you, not toward you. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.63: “White lines separate traffic going the same direction.”
The red lights at a railroad crossing are flashing. What must you do?
Stop and yield to the train. A train cannot stop or swerve for you, so the lights mean it is coming whether you can see it yet or not. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.66: “When the lights are flashing, STOP! A train is approaching. You are legally required to yield the right of way to the train.”
After a crash, how long must you stay at the scene?
Until police have questioned everyone. Leaving before police talk to everyone makes it hard to learn what happened and can be a crime. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.67: “Stop your vehicle at or near the crash scene, and stay there until the police have arrived and questioned everyone involved;”
You hit a parked car and cannot find the owner. What must you do?
Leave a note with your information. The owner has no other way to know who hit their car or how to get it paid for. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.67: “If you damage an unattended vehicle or other property and cannot locate the owner, leave the following information on a piece of paper where the owner can find it:”
May a police officer stop you just to inspect your vehicle's equipment?
Yes, the officer has that right. Bad brakes or dead lights endanger everyone on the road, not just the owner. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.68: “Therefore, a police officer has the right to stop you and inspect the equipment on your vehicle.”
Where can you find the recommended tire pressure for your vehicle?
On the driver's side door jamb. Tires too soft or too hard grip the road poorly and can fail, and the right number is set for your car. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.68: “Check tire pressure using the recommended psi (pounds per square inch) found in the vehicle owner's manual or the driver's side door jamb of the vehicle.”
What rights do motorcyclists have on public roads?
The same as other road users. A rider has as much right to a lane as you do, and treating them as less is how drivers crowd them. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.69: “Motorcyclists have the same rights and responsibilities on public roads as other users.”
Must you yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk area with no painted lines?
Yes, whether marked or not. Every corner is a crossing for people on foot, painted or not, and they expect cars to stop. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.70: “You are required to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk area, whether there are pavement markings or not.”
Where on the road must a bicyclist ride?
As far right as practical and safe. Riding right lets faster cars get by, while the bicyclist still keeps the same rights as any driver. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.70: “They must ride as close to the right side of pavement as is practical and safe.”
The slow-moving vehicle symbol means the vehicle cannot travel faster than what speed?
25 mph. Closing on a 25 mph tractor at highway speed eats up the gap in seconds, so the symbol gives you early warning. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.71: “It means the vehicle cannot travel faster than 25 miles per hour.”
The Move Over Law applies to a vehicle with its lights on that is stopped or moving slower than what speed?
20 mph. A plow or repair truck crawling along the road is as exposed as one that is parked. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.71: “Effective July 2018, the Wyoming Statute states that when an emergency vehicle or an authorized municipal, public utility or highway construction or maintenance vehicle is stopped or is moving at less than twenty (20) miles per hour on or within three (3) feet of a roadway with lights or other emergency signals activated, the driver of every other vehicle should be sure to do one of the following, as soon as it is safe:”
During which seasons are vehicle-animal crashes most common in Wyoming?
Fall and spring. Herds cross highways in large numbers when they move between ranges, so the risk jumps in those seasons. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.72: “While such crashes can occur at any time of the year, they are most prevalent during the fall and spring, while animals are migrating between their summer and winter habitats.”
In the IPDE method, what is a critical object?
Anything that could make you change speed or turn. You cannot avoid a danger you have not noticed, so naming it early buys time to act. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.73: “IDENTIFY: Defensive drivers scan for any person, vehicle, animal or anything else that could cause them to slow down, speed up or turn.”
How far ahead do defensive drivers scan?
At least 10 to 15 seconds. Looking far ahead gives you time to spot trouble and slow down smoothly instead of slamming on the brakes. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.74: “Defensive drivers scan at least 10 to 15 seconds ahead.”
How should you let the driver behind know you are going to stop?
Touch the brake early to show brake lights. Early brake lights warn the driver behind before you slow hard, which prevents rear-end crashes. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.74: “Touching your brake to turn on your brake lights and to start slowing well in advance of stopping;”
Where should you keep a cushion of space around your vehicle?
Ahead, behind and to the sides. Empty space is what gives you somewhere to go when another driver brakes, swerves or drifts. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.75: “A proven method of defensive driving is to isolate your vehicle from other vehicles with a cushion of space ahead, behind, and to the sides to give you the distance to avoid the mistakes of others.”
At least how many seconds back should a car driver stay from the vehicle ahead?
2 seconds. Rear-end crashes from following too close are very common, and 2 seconds is the time you need to see trouble and brake. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.75: “If you are driving a car, stay at least two seconds back from the vehicle ahead.”
On wet roads, how many seconds of following distance should a car keep?
4 seconds. Wet pavement makes tires slip, so it takes longer to stop. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.75: “wet, when you are carrying a heavier than normal load, or at night (cars, four seconds).”
A driver is tailgating you. What should you do with the space in front of you?
Make it larger. If you have to brake hard, the tailgater may hit you; a bigger gap ahead lets you slow down gently. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.76: “Provide more time and space ahead to react to emergencies (Increase the following distance between you and the vehicle in front of you.);”
You are boxed in with vehicles on both sides. How can you respond to trouble ahead?
Only by speeding up or slowing down. Without space beside you, you cannot steer away from a danger. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.76: “Your ability to respond to a situation ahead is limited to speeding up or slowing down.”
What does it mean to separate risks?
Take them one at a time. Dealing with two dangers at once leaves you no room for either; one at a time keeps an escape open. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.76: “Take risks one at a time whenever possible.”
When you must deal with two risks at the same time, what should you do?
Give the most room to the worst danger. Not every hazard is equally likely to move suddenly, so space should go where the threat is greatest. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.77: “When you cannot separate risks and must deal with two or more at the same time, compromise by giving the most room to the worst danger.”
During what hours must your headlights be on?
Half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise. Dusk and dawn are when other drivers lose sight of a car without lights, even if the sky still looks bright to you. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.77: “Headlights must be used from one-half hour after sunset until one-half hour before sunrise and at any other time when, due to insufficient light or unfavorable weather conditions, persons and vehicles on the road are not clearly discernible at a distance of 1,000 feet ahead.”
How far ahead of an oncoming vehicle should you dim your high beams?
At least 500 feet. High beams blind the oncoming driver, and a blinded driver can drift into your lane. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.78: “You should dim at least 500 feet (about four to five seconds) before meeting an oncoming vehicle.”
Which headlights should you use in fog?
Low beam headlights. High beams bounce off fog and throw a wall of glare back into your eyes. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.78: “low beam headlights.”
When is the road especially slippery after rain starts?
During the first half hour. The first rain lifts oil out of the pavement before it is washed away, so the road is greasiest then. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.79: “Be careful during the first half hour after the rain begins.”
What does the manual recommend fitting to your car for snow?
Snow tires or chains. Ordinary tires slide on packed snow, so the car needs more road to stop. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.79: “your car with snow tires or chains to prevent”
What is the best defense against strong wind?
Driving at slower speeds. A gust pushes a fast car farther before you can correct, and tall vehicles catch the most wind. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.79: “Driving at slower speeds is the best defense.”
What does a defensive driver do about blizzards?
Avoids driving in one if possible. A blizzard combines the blindness of fog with the slick roads of ice, and many drivers end up stranded. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.80: “Because of this, a defensive driver simply avoids driving in a blizzard, if at all possible.”
If a crash seems sure to happen, what should you do first?
Slow as fast as possible. Every mile per hour you shed before impact makes the crash less violent. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.80: “First, slow as fast as possible and, second, turn away. Third, when appropriate, speed up.”
If your gas pedal sticks and you cannot free it with your foot, what should you do?
Shift to neutral or push in the clutch. Neutral cuts the engine off from the wheels, so the car stops speeding up even with the pedal stuck. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.81: “Try to free the pedal with your foot (If this does not work, push in the clutch or shift to neutral.);”
If you skid after slamming on the brakes, what should you do?
Ease up on the brakes. Locked wheels cannot steer, and letting the brakes off lets the tires roll and grip again. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.81: “If you slammed on the brakes, ease up on them.”
If your brakes fail, what should you try first?
Pump the brake pedal rapidly. Pumping can build up enough pressure in a failing system to slow the car. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.82: “Pump the brake pedal rapidly;”
What should you do first when a tire blows out?
Grip the wheel and steer straight. A blowout yanks the car toward the flat tire, and a firm grip keeps it in its lane. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.82: “Hold the steering wheel tightly, and keep the car going straight down the road.”
A car is coming at you in your lane. What should you do first?
Slow down and flash your headlights. The other driver may be asleep or distracted, and lights may wake them up in time. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.82: “Slow down and try to warn him by flashing your headlights.”
Why must you never turn the key to lock while the vehicle is moving?
The steering will lock up. A car whose wheel will not turn cannot follow the road. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.83: “Never turn your ignition key to the lock position while the vehicle is in motion.”
If your wheels run off the pavement, what should you do?
Stay on the shoulder, ease off gas. Jerking back onto the pavement at speed can flip the car or send it across into oncoming traffic. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.83: “Stay on the shoulder. Ease off the accelerator.”
After driving through deep water, how should you dry your brakes?
Brake gently several times. Wet brakes can pull the car to one side or fail to hold just when you need them. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.84: “You should always test your brakes after driving through deep water.”
Your car breaks down on the Interstate. Should you walk for help?
No, do not walk for help. People walking beside fast Interstate traffic are struck by drivers who never expect them. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.84: “DO NOT walk for help if you are on the Interstate.”
Why is carbon monoxide hard to notice?
You cannot see or smell it. Because you cannot see or smell it, it can make you sick before you know it is there. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.84: “Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless and poisonous gas.”
At which railroad crossings should you expect a train?
Every crossing, every time. Trains do not run on a set schedule you can count on, and a quiet crossing can have a train any time. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.85: “Always expect a train at every highway-rail intersection;”
What should you watch for when driving through road construction?
Workers or equipment entering traffic. Workers and machines move into lanes with little warning, and a fast car cannot react. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.85: “Drive slowly and keep alert for workers or equipment that may enter into the traffic stream, causing you to slow or change lanes.”
What colors are construction signs?
Black letters on orange. The different color tells you at a glance that the danger is a work zone, not a normal road feature. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.96: “Construction signs have black lettering on an orange background.”
Where pedestrians are likely, how fast should you drive?
Slow enough to see and react. A child or jogger can step out from behind a parked car, and you need room to stop. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.86: “In situations where encounters with pedestrians are likely to occur, slow your motor vehicle to a speed allowing adequate sight distance to respond to possible situations.”
What should you do if you are overcome with emotion?
Not drive until in control. Strong emotions make you react instead of think, so you miss dangers and make poor choices. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.87: “Whenever anyone is overcome with emotion and not in control of themselves, they should not drive.”
How must a driver with poor side vision check to the sides?
By turning the head, not just the eyes. Eyes alone cannot reach far enough to the side, so a car beside you can be missed. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.87: “Drivers with POOR SIDE VISION must look to the sides by moving their head as well as their eyes.”
What are often the best ways to make up for hearing loss when driving?
Hearing aids and outside mirrors. Mirrors let your eyes catch what your ears would have warned you about, like a car in your blind spot. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.88: “Hearing aids and outside rearview mirrors are often the best way to compensate for loss of hearing.”
What does Wyoming law ban while you drive?
Reading or sending texts. Reading or typing a text takes your eyes off the road for seconds at a time. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.89: “Wyoming law prohibits reading or sending a text message from a cell phone or other device while operating a vehicle.”
Where may bicycles be ridden in Wyoming?
On all public roads. Because a cyclist has the right to be on the road, you must expect and share the lane with them. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.91: “Legally classified as vehicles, bicycles can be ridden on all public roads in Wyoming.”
Why should you know the meaning of sign shapes and colors?
To act when letters are hard to read. In a storm you may only see a sign's outline, and that has to be enough to act on. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.95: “If fading light, fog, rain, snow or darkness makes it difficult to see the letters, you should still know what to look for or what to do.”
When may you turn right at a red light?
After stopping and yielding, unless signed. Drivers with the green and people in the crosswalk have the right of way, so you go only after them. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.97: “You can turn right at a RED light unless there is a sign that prohibits the turn.”
What must you do at this sign?
Come to a complete stop. A rolling stop leaves no time to see the car about to cross in front of you. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.95: “You must come to a complete stop.”
What does this sign warn of?
Two-way traffic ahead. A road that becomes two-way puts oncoming cars in the lane next to you. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.95: “They warn of a possible danger ahead.”
What does this sign warn of?
A railroad crossing ahead. It gives you time to slow down before you reach tracks you may not see yet. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.96: “sign warns of a railroad crossing ahead.”
What do railroad advance warning signs tell you to do?
Slow, look, listen, be ready to stop. A train cannot stop or swerve, so you are the one who has to be ready. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.66: “Advance warning signs advise you to slow down, look and listen for the train, and be prepared to stop if a train is approaching.”
Where does this sign direct you?
To a hospital. In an emergency, knowing the sign for a hospital saves time finding care. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.96: “Guide signs are very helpful. They tell you where you are, what road you are on and how to get where you want to go.”
