Night headlight rules — Wyoming Permit Test

Night headlight rules on the Wyoming permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

In Wyoming, headlights must be used from one-half hour after sunset until one-half hour before sunrise.

Dusk and dawn are when other drivers lose sight of a car without lights, even if the sky still looks bright to you.

Headlights must be used from one-half hour after sunset until one-half hour before sunrise and at any other time when, due to insufficient light or unfavorable weather conditions, persons and vehicles on the road are not clearly discernible at a distance of 1,000 feet ahead.

Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.77

You must also use headlights whenever poor light or bad weather means people and vehicles on the road are not clearly visible at 1,000 feet ahead.

In a storm at noon, a car without lights can be invisible to someone pulling out in front of it.

Turn on your low beams whenever the light begins to fade, so others can see you and judge what you are doing.

At dusk a gray car blends into the road, and lights let other drivers see it in time.

It is not legal to drive with only parking lights on when headlights are required; parking lights cannot be seen until your vehicle is already clearly visible.

Parking lights are too dim to warn anyone, so a car using them is seen too late to avoid.

The Wyoming manual says to use high beams on rural highways.

Dark country roads hide animals and stalled cars that low beams light up too late.

On the test

During what hours must your headlights be on?

Half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise. Dusk and dawn are when other drivers lose sight of a car without lights, even if the sky still looks bright to you. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.77: “Headlights must be used from one-half hour after sunset until one-half hour before sunrise and at any other time when, due to insufficient light or unfavorable weather conditions, persons and vehicles on the road are not clearly discernible at a distance of 1,000 feet ahead.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
