Speed for road conditions — Wyoming Permit Test

Speed for road conditions on the Wyoming permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

Each tire touches the road with a patch of rubber only about the size of a person's hand, so your grip depends on the road's condition.

Four small patches of rubber are all that hold the car on the road, so a bad surface takes grip away fast.

The only contact your car has with the road is through its tires, and each only has an area of rubber about the size of a person's hand on the surface of the road.

Adjust your speed before you enter a curve; going too fast can break the tires' grip on the road.

Braking hard in the middle of a curve can make the tires slide, so the slowing has to happen on the straight.

Adjust speed BEFORE entering a curve. Going too fast can break the grip that tires have on the road.

Approach a blind intersection, where trees, bushes or buildings block your view to the side, at no more than 15 mph.

You cannot see a car coming from the side until it is almost in front of you, so you need to be slow enough to stop.

Therefore approach a “blind” intersection at no more than 15 mph.

On a wet road, reduce your speed by at least 5-10 mph.

Water between the tire and the road cuts grip, so the car needs more room to stop or turn.

Reduce speed by at least 5-10 mph.

On packed snow, reduce your speed by at least half.

Packed snow gives the tires far less grip than a wet road, so it takes a much bigger cut in speed.

Packed snow Reduce speed by at least half.

On ice, reduce your speed to a crawl, and slow even more if vehicles are ahead.

Ice gives almost no grip at all, so even a gentle stop can take a very long way.

Reduce speed to a crawl. You may have to slow even more if vehicles are ahead.

On the test

About how much of each tire's rubber touches the road?

A patch about the size of a hand. Four small patches of rubber are all that hold the car on the road, so a bad surface takes grip away fast. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.41: “The only contact your car has with the road is through its tires, and each only has an area of rubber about the size of a person's hand on the surface of the road.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
