When a crash is imminent — Wyoming Permit Test
When a crash is imminent on the Wyoming permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
To make an unavoidable collision less dangerous: first slow as fast as possible, second turn away, and third, when appropriate, speed up.
Every mile per hour you shed before impact makes the crash less violent.
First, slow as fast as possible and, second, turn away. Third, when appropriate, speed up.
If you cannot avoid a collision, make sure you do not hit the other vehicle head-on; the rule of thumb is to turn right.
Turning right takes you away from oncoming traffic and toward the shoulder, and if the other driver does the same the crash may be avoided.
The rule of thumb is to turn right.
Try not to use the brakes while turning away from a crash, because braking can make you skid and lose the ability to turn away.
Tires can do only so much at once, and braking hard uses up the grip you need to steer.
Try not to use the brakes while turning away to lessen the chance of skidding and therefore not being able to turn away.
If you cannot avoid a crash, turn away from oncoming traffic and choose a glancing blow rather than a head-on crash.
A head-on crash adds both cars' speeds together, while a glancing blow spreads the force out.
Turn away from oncoming traffic, choosing a glancing blow rather than a head-on crash;
Speed up to avoid a collision from the side or from behind if there is room, then slow once the danger has passed.
Pulling ahead can take you out of the path of a car that would otherwise hit your side or rear.
Speed up to avoid a collision from the side or from behind if there is room to do so.
If you must hit something, choose something that is more likely to bend or break than a solid object.
A bush or fence absorbs the blow, while a tree or wall stops the car and the people in it at once.
If necessary, choose to hit something that will more likely give way.
On the test
If a crash seems sure to happen, what should you do first?
Slow as fast as possible. Every mile per hour you shed before impact makes the crash less violent. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.80: “First, slow as fast as possible and, second, turn away. Third, when appropriate, speed up.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
