Ignition interlock requirement — Wyoming Permit Test

Ignition interlock requirement on the Wyoming permit test — 8 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

On a first DWUI, a BAC of .15% or greater at arrest means you must hold an ignition interlock restricted driver license.

A very high BAC on a first arrest marks a heavy drinker, and the device stops the car from starting if they drink again.

If your BAC (blood alcohol content) at the time of arrest was .15% or greater, you will be required to hold an ignition interlock restricted driver license for a period of 6 months before you are eligible for any other type of driver license.

Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.20

A first-offense driver with a BAC of .15% or more must hold an ignition interlock restricted driver license for 6 months.

Months of blowing into the device before every trip build the habit of never driving after drinking.

If your BAC (blood alcohol content) at the time of arrest was .15% or greater, you will be required to hold an ignition interlock restricted driver license for a period of 6 months before you are eligible for any other type of driver license.

Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.22

A second DWUI conviction involving alcohol brings a one-year ignition interlock requirement.

A second offense shows the risk is ongoing, so the car is kept from starting for a drinking driver for longer.

One-year ignition interlock requirement if convicted of a 2nd DWUI when alcohol is involved.

Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.28

A fourth or subsequent DWUI involving alcohol brings a lifetime ignition interlock requirement, but the driver may petition for its removal five years after the conviction date.

The lifetime rule protects the public from the worst repeat offenders, while the petition rewards years of staying sober.

Lifetime ignition interlock requirement if convicted of a 4th or subsequent DWUI when alcohol is involved;

Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.28

A required ignition interlock device is installed at the applicant's own expense.

Making the offender pay keeps the cost of drinking and driving on the person who chose to do it.

Ignition interlock devices are required to be installed, at the applicant's expense, upon conviction of the following offenses:

Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.28

A driver with an ignition interlock requirement must have the device installed on any vehicle they drive, by a technician the department certifies.

If the device were on one car only, the driver could simply borrow another car after drinking.

vehicle they drive at an installation site and by a technician certified by the department.

Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.29

A driver is not eligible for any other type of driver license until they have held an ignition interlock restricted driver license for the period required.

Skipping the interlock period would let a convicted drinking driver back into an ordinary car before proving they can stay sober.

A driver is not eligible for any other type of driver license until they have held an ignition interlock restricted driver license for the period required.

Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.29

A driver may apply for a 24/7 restricted driver license if a court orders them into the 24/7 Sobriety Program in place of the ignition interlock requirement.

Regular sobriety checks can do the same job as the device, but only a judge decides that swap.

A driver may apply for a 24/7 restricted driver license if they have received an order from the Court ordering the driver to participate in the 24/7 Sobriety Program in lieu of the ignition interlock requirement.

On the test

On a first DWUI, what BAC at arrest brings an ignition interlock requirement?

.15% or greater. A very high BAC on a first arrest marks a heavy drinker, and the device stops the car from starting if they drink again. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.20: “If your BAC (blood alcohol content) at the time of arrest was .15% or greater, you will be required to hold an ignition interlock restricted driver license for a period of 6 months before you are eligible for any other type of driver license.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
