Speed for light conditions — Wyoming Permit Test

Speed for light conditions on the Wyoming permit test — 3 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

At night your headlights let you see clearly only about 250 feet ahead.

You cannot avoid what you cannot see, so your speed has to fit how far your lights reach.

Your lights will only let you see clearly about 250 feet.

Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.42

Never drive so fast that you cannot stop within the distance your headlights show; above 55 mph on a dark road you are driving blind.

Past that speed, anything you see in your lights is already closer than the distance it takes you to stop.

Never drive so fast that you cannot stop within the distance you can see ahead with your headlights.

Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.42

In very heavy rain, snow or thick fog you may not see more than 100 feet ahead; then no speed is safe, so pull off the road and wait until it clears.

If you cannot see far enough to stop for what is ahead, slowing down is not enough to keep you safe.

Whenever you cannot see well enough, pull off the road and wait until it clears.

On the test

About how far ahead do your headlights let you see clearly at night?

250 feet. You cannot avoid what you cannot see, so your speed has to fit how far your lights reach. Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, p.42: “Your lights will only let you see clearly about 250 feet.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
