Provisional license requirements — Alaska Permit Test

Provisional license requirements on the Alaska permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

If you are under 18 and getting your first driver license, a parent, legal guardian or employer must certify at least 40 hours of driving experience.

Real hours behind the wheel, not just a test, are what build the judgment a new driver needs when driving alone.

your parent, legal guardian, or employer must certify that you have had at least 40 hours of driving experience, including at least 10 hours of driving in progressively challenging circumstances, such as driving in inclement weather and nighttime driving; and

Alaska Driver Manual, p.9

Of the 40 certified hours, at least 10 must be driving in progressively challenging circumstances, such as inclement weather and nighttime driving.

Snow, ice and dark roads cause many new-driver crashes, so a learner should face them first with help beside them.

For a first license under 18, the practice hours may be certified by a parent, legal guardian or employer.

The adults who rode along know how much and how well the teen really drove, so they are the ones who vouch for it.

You must not have been convicted of a traffic law violation within the six months before you apply for an Alaska provisional license.

A clean record on the permit shows the learner is following the rules before being trusted to drive alone.

On the test

How many hours of driving experience must be certified before an under-18 driver gets an Alaska provisional license?

40 hours. Real hours behind the wheel, not just a test, are what build the judgment a new driver needs when driving alone. Alaska Driver Manual, p.9: “your parent, legal guardian, or employer must certify that you have had at least 40 hours of driving experience, including at least 10 hours of driving in progressively challenging circumstances, such as driving in inclement weather and nighttime driving; and”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
