Provisional passenger and hour limits — Alaska Permit Test
Provisional passenger and hour limits on the Alaska permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
An Alaska provisional driver may not carry passengers unless one of them is a parent, legal guardian or a person at least 21 years of age.
Teen passengers are a big distraction for a new driver, and an adult on board tends to keep the driving calm and careful.
MAY NOT carry passengers unless one of the passengers is a parent, legal guardian, or a person at least 21 years of age
An Alaska provisional driver may carry passengers who are siblings without a parent in the vehicle.
Driving a brother or sister to school is everyday family help, so the law makes room for it.
MAY carry, without a parent in the vehicle, passengers if they are siblings.
An Alaska provisional driver may not drive between 1:00 am and 5:00 am unless accompanied by a parent, legal guardian or licensed person at least 21.
Late-night roads bring tired drivers, darkness and impaired drivers, which is when new drivers crash most.
MAY NOT operate a motor vehicle between the hours of 1:00 am and 5:00 am unless accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, or a person at least 21 years of age who is licensed to drive the class of vehicle being used.
An Alaska provisional driver may drive between 1:00 am and 5:00 am to or from work, or within the scope of employment, along the most direct route.
A teen with a late shift still needs to get home, so the law allows the trip but not a detour on the way.
MAY operate a motor vehicle between the hours of 1:00am and 5:00am to or from your place of employment or within the scope of your employment and driving is along the most direct route.
The provisional passenger and hour restrictions do not apply to an off-system license restricted to areas not connected to the land highway system.
Remote communities off the road system have little traffic and few other ways to get around, so the limits would do more harm than good.
Note: The passenger and hour restrictions do not apply if you have an “off system” license restricted to areas not connected to the land highway system or is not connected to a highway where average daily traffic volume is 499 or greater.
On the test
An Alaska provisional driver may carry non-family passengers when one of the passengers is who?
A person aged 21 or older. Teen passengers are a big distraction for a new driver, and an adult on board tends to keep the driving calm and careful. Alaska Driver Manual, p.10: “MAY NOT carry passengers unless one of the passengers is a parent, legal guardian, or a person at least 21 years of age”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
