Passing on the left — Arizona Permit Test
Passing on the left on the Arizona permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
To pass a vehicle traveling in the same direction, pass on the left.
Drivers look left for passing traffic. A car coming up on the right is the one they do not expect.
When you want to pass a vehicle or a motorcycle traveling in the same direction, pass on the left.
Return to the right lane after passing once you can see the entire front or both headlights of the passed vehicle in your rearview mirror, after a shoulder check and a signal.
Cut back sooner and you swing right across the front of the car you just passed.
When you can see the entire front or both headlights of the vehicle you passed in your rearview mirror, look over your shoulder to be sure the lane is clear, signal that you are changing lanes, then return to the lane on the right.
Before passing, make sure you have time and room to get all the way in front of the vehicle without creating danger for oncoming vehicles.
Run out of room halfway past and you are stuck in the oncoming lane with nowhere to go.
Make sure you have time and room to get all the way in front of the vehicle you are passing without creating danger for vehicles coming toward you.
When another vehicle comes up behind you and sounds its horn or flashes its lights, move to the right when safe and let it pass.
Holding your lane keeps a frustrated driver stuck behind you, where they may try something risky.
When another vehicle comes up behind you and sounds its horn or flashes its lights, move to the right when safe and let it pass.
Never speed up when another vehicle is passing you.
Speeding up leaves the passing car stuck beside you in the oncoming lane.
Never speed up when another vehicle is passing you.
The same passing procedure applies to passing slow-moving motorcycles, bicycles and mopeds.
A bike or moped needs a full lane of room when you go by, the same as a car.
This procedure also applies to passing slow-moving motorcycles, bicycles and mopeds.
On the test
On which side should you pass a vehicle traveling in your direction?
On the left. Drivers look left for passing traffic. A car coming up on the right is the one they do not expect. Arizona Driver License Manual and Customer Service Guide, p.27: “When you want to pass a vehicle or a motorcycle traveling in the same direction, pass on the left.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
