Signaling turns and lane changes — Arizona Permit Test
Signaling turns and lane changes on the Arizona permit test — 7 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Signal at least 100 feet (about 4 seconds) before you turn so other drivers have time to react.
A signal that starts at the corner gives the driver behind no time to slow down.
Signal at least 100 feet (approximately 4 seconds) before you turn so other drivers will have time to react.
If you plan to turn just beyond an intersection, do not signal until you are in the intersection.
Signal early and a driver waiting at the corner thinks you are turning there, and pulls into your path.
If you plan to turn beyond an intersection, do not signal until you are in the intersection (drivers in the intersection may pull into your path).
After you complete your move, be sure your turn signal is off.
A signal left blinking tells other drivers you are about to turn, and they pull out in front of you.
After you complete your move, be sure your turn signal is off.
Use your turn signals even when you do not see other vehicles or motorcycles; the one you do not see is the most dangerous one.
The car in your blind spot or over the hill still needs to know what you are about to do.
Develop the habit of using your turn signals even when you do not see other vehicles or motorcycles on the road.
Signaling does not give you the right-of-way.
The blinker says what you want to do. It does not make the lane empty.
Signaling does not give you the right-of-way.
Turns may be signaled with turn signals, hand signals, or both.
If your signal bulb burns out, your arm still tells the driver behind what you are doing.
Turns may be indicated using turn signals, hand signals, or both.
Use your turn signals whenever you change directions, including when pulling away from a curb or pulling off to the side of the road.
A car easing off the curb without a signal is hit by a driver who thought it was parked.
Enter or leave a freeway. Pull away from the curb. Pull over to the side of the road.
On the test
How far before a turn must you signal?
At least 100 feet. A signal that starts at the corner gives the driver behind no time to slow down. Arizona Driver License Manual and Customer Service Guide, p.26: “Signal at least 100 feet (approximately 4 seconds) before you turn so other drivers will have time to react.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
