Ice and snow driving — Iowa Permit Test
Ice and snow driving on the Iowa permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Before driving, make sure your entire vehicle is clear of snow and ice, including windows, headlights, turn signals and taillights.
Snow on the lights hides your signals from others, and snow on the glass hides the road from you. Clearing only a peephole is not enough.
Make sure your ENTIRE vehicle is clear of snow and ice before driving, this includes windows, headlights, turn signals, and taillights.
Black ice is common on bridges and overpasses, which can be slippery even when other road surfaces are not.
Air flows above and below a bridge, so it freezes before the road around it. Black ice is hard to see, so expect it there.
Black ice can occur anywhere, but is common on bridges and overpasses, where moisture freezes quickly due to circulating air both above and below the road surface.
When starting from a stop on ice or snow, keep the wheels straight ahead and accelerate gently to avoid spinning the tires.
Pressing the gas hard makes the tires spin and lose grip. A gentle start lets them catch the road.
When starting to drive from a stopped position, keep the wheels straight ahead and accelerate gently to avoid spinning the tires.
On ice and snow, begin slowing long before a stop and brake only while traveling in a straight line.
Braking while turning on ice can send the car into a skid. Slowing early, while going straight, keeps you in control.
Brake only when traveling in a straight line.
Stopping distances can be 10 times greater on ice and snow.
Tires barely grip ice, so the car keeps sliding long after you brake. Leaving far more space ahead keeps you from sliding into a crash.
Stopping distances can be 10 times greater in ice and snow.
On the test
Before driving in winter, what must be cleared of snow and ice?
The whole vehicle, lights included. Snow on the lights hides your signals from others, and snow on the glass hides the road from you. Clearing only a peephole is not enough. Iowa Driver's License Manual, p.61: “Make sure your ENTIRE vehicle is clear of snow and ice before driving, this includes windows, headlights, turn signals, and taillights.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
