Tornado safety — Iowa Permit Test
Tornado safety on the Iowa permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
A tornado watch means a tornado is possible; a tornado warning means a tornado is about to happen and everyone should seek shelter right away.
Knowing the difference tells you how fast to act. A warning means there is no time to wait, so find shelter now.
If a warning is issued, a tornado is imminent and all persons should seek shelter immediately.
If you are driving during a tornado, the best course of action is to find a sturdy building for shelter.
A car offers little protection from tornado winds and flying debris. A strong building is far safer.
If you’re driving during a tornado, the best course of action is to find a sturdy building to seek shelter.
If you cannot reach shelter in a tornado, pull over, duck below the windows, keep your seat belt fastened and cover your head.
Flying glass and debris are the main danger. Staying low and belted, with your head covered, protects you best inside the car.
If you are unable to make it to a shelter, pull over, duck down below the windows in the vehicle, keep your seat belt fastened, and cover your head with your hands or an object such as a blanket or cushion.
During a tornado, stay away from bridges and overpasses.
An overpass gives no real cover from wind and flying debris, so it is not a safe place to wait out a tornado.
Stay away from bridges and overpasses.
On the test
What does a tornado warning mean?
A tornado is imminent, so seek shelter now. Knowing the difference tells you how fast to act. A warning means there is no time to wait, so find shelter now. Iowa Driver's License Manual, p.60: “If a warning is issued, a tornado is imminent and all persons should seek shelter immediately.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
