Space to the side — Maine Permit Test
Space to the side on the Maine permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
On multi-lane streets, do not drive alongside other vehicles, since you may be in their blind spot; pull ahead or drop back.
A driver who cannot see you may change lanes right into your door.
Driving alongside reduces the space you may need to avoid a collision if someone crowds your lane or tries to suddenly change lanes. Either pull ahead of the other vehicle or drop back.
Do not crowd the center line: in the lane next to it you have no space to escape, and an oncoming car could swerve across or turn left without signaling.
An oncoming driver who drifts a foot over the line hits you if you are hugging it.
When you are in the lane next to the center line, there is no space for escape. And an oncoming vehicle could swerve across the center line or turn left without signaling.
Make space for vehicles entering a multi-lane road by moving over a lane or slowing down.
A car at the end of a short on-ramp has nowhere to go if you hold the lane.
Make space for vehicles entering multi-lane roads by moving over a lane or slowing down.
At freeway exits, do not drive alongside other cars: a driver may exit suddenly, or a driver exiting may swerve back onto the freeway.
A last-second exit from the lane beside you cuts straight across your hood.
At freeway exits, don't drive alongside other cars. A driver on the freeway to your left may exit suddenly or a driver exiting may suddenly swerve back onto the freeway.
Keep a space between yourself and parked cars, because someone may step out or a car may pull out of its space suddenly.
An opening door can swing a full arm's length into your lane.
Keep a space between yourself and parked cars. Someone may step out of a car, from between parked cars or a car may start to pull out of their parking space suddenly.
On the test
On a multi-lane street, what should you do instead of driving alongside another car?
Pull ahead of it or drop back. A driver who cannot see you may change lanes right into your door. Maine Driver’s License Manual, p.87: “Driving alongside reduces the space you may need to avoid a collision if someone crowds your lane or tries to suddenly change lanes. Either pull ahead of the other vehicle or drop back.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
