Instruction permit eligibility — North Dakota Permit Test
Instruction permit eligibility on the North Dakota permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
To get a North Dakota instruction permit, you must be at least 14 years old.
Fourteen is when the state lets a young driver begin learning, always with an experienced adult beside them.
All applicants must be at least 14 years of age.
To get a North Dakota permit, you must first pass the knowledge examination and the visual screen test.
You need to know the rules and see the road well before you practice on it, even with help.
To receive a permit you must first pass the knowledge examination at a Driver License office or at nd.knowtodrive.com and the visual screen test.
Permit applicants under 18 must have a parent or legal guardian approve and sponsor the application.
A young driver's parent takes on responsibility for their driving, so the parent has to agree to it first.
Applicants under 18 years of age must have parent or legal guardian approval and sponsorship.
If a parent or guardian cannot appear, they may name someone in a notarized document to sign, but the financial liability stays with the parent or guardian.
Handing off a signature should not hand off the responsibility for the harm a young driver might cause.
If the father, mother, or legal guardian is unable to appear, they may designate, through a notarized document, an individual temporarily authorized to sign; financial liability remains with the father, mother, or legal guardian.
If a minor has no living parent or legal guardian, another adult who swears responsibility for the minor may sign the sponsorship.
A teen with no parent should still be able to learn to drive, so long as a grown-up takes responsibility.
If there is no living parent or legal guardian, another adult swearing responsibility for the minor may sign the sponsorship.
If you pass the permit test online, you must still make an appointment to visit a North Dakota Driver License office to get your permit.
The office still has to check who you are and test your eyes in person before the permit is issued.
Please note if you passed the permit test online you must make an appointment to visit a ND Driver License office to obtain your permit.
On the test
What is the youngest age at which you can get a North Dakota instruction permit?
Age 14. Fourteen is when the state lets a young driver begin learning, always with an experienced adult beside them. North Dakota Noncommercial Driver License Manual, p.3: “All applicants must be at least 14 years of age.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
