GDL program — New Jersey Permit Test

GDL program on the New Jersey permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

New Jersey hands out driving privileges in stages, and the unrestricted basic license is not issued before age 18.

Each stage adds one freedom at a time. A new driver builds road time before the rules loosen.

the system gradually introduces driving privileges to first-time drivers, extends their practice driving time and requires a minimum age of 18 in order to receive an unrestricted, basic driver license

New Jersey Driver Manual, p.14

A first-time driver who breaks a GDL restriction may be fined $100 or have their driving privilege suspended.

The restrictions are the whole point of the staged license. A rule with no cost behind it is a suggestion.

Failure to do so may result in a fine of $100 or suspension of a motorist’s driving privilege.

New Jersey Driver Manual, p.14

A GDL permit holder under 21 must complete at least 50 hours of supervised practice, including 10 hours after dark.

Night driving is the part a learner gets least of by accident. The hours make sure some of it happens on purpose.

a minimum of 50 practice driving hours, including 10 during darkness prior to a road test appointment.

New Jersey Driver Manual, p.34

A probationary driver must drive unsupervised for at least one year before the basic driver license.

The first year alone behind the wheel is the risky one. The license waits until it is behind the driver.

Must practice unsupervised driving for at least one year

On the test

How does New Jersey's Graduated Driver License program hand out driving privileges?

In stages, ending with a basic license at 18. Each stage adds one freedom at a time. A new driver builds road time before the rules loosen. New Jersey Driver Manual, p.14: “the system gradually introduces driving privileges to first-time drivers, extends their practice driving time and requires a minimum age of 18 in order to receive an unrestricted, basic driver license”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
