Permits and supervision — New Jersey Permit Test
Permits and supervision on the New Jersey permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
A New Jersey permit holder must be accompanied in the front seat by a supervising driver who is at least 21.
The supervising driver is there to catch what a beginner misses, and they cannot do that from the back seat.
Permit holder must be accompanied in the front seat by an adult supervising driver who is at least 21 years of age and who possesses a valid New Jersey driver license and has a minimum of three years’ driving experience.
A supervising driver must hold a valid New Jersey license and have at least three years of driving experience.
A driver who has been licensed a few months cannot teach the road. They are still reading it themselves.
who possesses a valid New Jersey driver license and has a minimum of three years’ driving experience
A New Jersey resident who is at least 17 and not in suspension may obtain a driver examination permit.
Seventeen is the age the state will test a driver who has had no course behind them.
Any New Jersey resident who is at least 17 years old and is not in suspension status can obtain a driver examination permit at any MVC Licensing Center.
A New Jersey resident of at least 16 may obtain a special learner permit by enrolling in a behind-the-wheel driver training course.
The course is why the age is lower. A student in one practices beside an instructor rather than on their own.
Any New Jersey resident who is at least 16 years old and is not in suspension status may enroll in a behind-the-wheel driver training course to obtain a special learner permit at any MVC Licensing Center.
A driver moving to New Jersey must buy an examination permit within 60 days or when their out-of-state license expires, whichever comes first.
A new resident drives New Jersey roads under New Jersey rules, so the state sets a date to come in by.
All out-of-state drivers are required to purchase an examination permit within 60 days of becoming a permanent New Jersey resident or when their out-of-state license expires, whichever comes first.
On the test
Who must sit beside a New Jersey permit holder while they practice?
An adult of 21 or older in the front seat. The supervising driver is there to catch what a beginner misses, and they cannot do that from the back seat. New Jersey Driver Manual, p.18: “Permit holder must be accompanied in the front seat by an adult supervising driver who is at least 21 years of age and who possesses a valid New Jersey driver license and has a minimum of three years’ driving experience.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
