GDL restrictions — New Jersey Permit Test
GDL restrictions on the New Jersey permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
A GDL permit or probationary driver under 21 may not drive between 11:01 pm and 5:00 am.
Late night is when crashes among young drivers cluster. The curfew takes the worst hours off the table.
No driving between 11:01 pm and 5:00 am
A GDL driver may not use a hand-held or hands-free cell phone or other electronic device behind the wheel.
A new driver has no spare attention to lend a phone. Hands-free still takes the mind off the road.
No using hand-held or hands-free cell phones or any other electronic devices.
An examination permit holder under 21 may carry their own dependents and one more passenger, unless a parent or guardian is in the car.
A car full of friends is the loudest distraction a new driver meets. The limit keeps the load down.
Passengers are limited to dependents of the permit holder and one addition-al passenger, unless accompanied by a parent/guardian.1 Permit holder and all passengers must wear seat belts.
A GDL permit holder and every passenger in the vehicle must wear a seat belt.
A belt is the cheapest protection in the car, and a new driver is responsible for the people riding with them.
Permit holder and all passengers must wear seat belts.
A GDL driver under 21 may drive during the restricted hours with written proof of a need to drive for work or religion.
Some jobs and services start before dawn. The state asks for proof rather than taking the driver's word.
Exemptions to the hours of rule for permit and probationary drivers under age 21: Proof of a need to drive during the prohibited hours for employment and/or religion.
A GDL driver under 21 must display two red reflective decals on the license plates of any vehicle they drive.
The decals tell a police officer which rules this car is under, since nothing else about it shows.
All GDL drivers under age 21, who possess a permit or probationary license, are required to display two visible, red reflective decals
On the test
When may a New Jersey GDL driver under 21 not drive?
Between 11:01 pm and 5:00 am. Late night is when crashes among young drivers cluster. The curfew takes the worst hours off the table. New Jersey Driver Manual, p.18: “No driving between 11:01 pm and 5:00 am”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
Where these come from
