Fog dust and smoke — Oregon Permit Test

Fog dust and smoke on the Oregon permit test — 2 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

In fog, dust, smoke or any area of low visibility, use headlights on low beam, because light from high beams reflects back and causes glare that makes it harder to see ahead.

High beams feel like the answer and are the opposite of it — the fog throws your own light straight back at you.

If you drive into fog, dust, smoke, or any area of low visibility, use headlights on low beam. Light from high beams will reflect back, causing glare, making it more difficult to see ahead.

2026-2027 Oregon Driver Manual, p.77

As visibility decreases, slow down, be alert for slow or stopped vehicles and other obstacles, and be prepared to pull over and stop — pulling as far right as you can and turning on your hazard lights.

Stopping in fog is safe only off the road; a vehicle halted in a lane is what the next driver finds too late.

If you choose to pull off the road, pull as far as you can to the right and turn on your hazard lights.

On the test

Which headlights should a driver use in fog?

Low beam. High beams feel like the answer and are the opposite of it — the fog throws your own light straight back at you. 2026-2027 Oregon Driver Manual, p.77: “If you drive into fog, dust, smoke, or any area of low visibility, use headlights on low beam. Light from high beams will reflect back, causing glare, making it more difficult to see ahead.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
