Rain — Oregon Permit Test

Rain on the Oregon permit test — 3 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

Rain impairs your ability to see ahead and increases braking distance, so apply the brakes sooner and more gently than usual; turn headlights on when your windshield wipers are on, and do not use cruise control in wet conditions.

Cruise control will accelerate through standing water rather than back off, which is how a car aquaplanes at a steady speed.

Increase your visibility to other motorists by turning on your headlights when your windshield wipers are on. Do not use cruise control in wet conditions.

Even summer showers can cause slippery roads when rain mixes with oil and dirt, and tires may hydroplane over a wet surface, reducing or losing the ability to steer and stop.

The most slippery moment is the start of the rain rather than the middle of it, because that is when the oil lifts.

If you drive through water and the brakes get wet, gently apply the brakes while driving slowly until they begin to respond, doing so as soon as you can; and do not drive through flooded areas, where high water may cause loss of control or engine stalling.

Wet brakes will not stop you at all until they have been dried, and finding that out at the next intersection is too late.

On the test

Why should a driver not use cruise control in wet conditions?

It holds speed rather than easing off. Cruise control will accelerate through standing water rather than back off, which is how a car aquaplanes at a steady speed. 2026-2027 Oregon Driver Manual, p.77: “Increase your visibility to other motorists by turning on your headlights when your windshield wipers are on. Do not use cruise control in wet conditions.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
